The hospital campus uses Forest, Ocean, River and Mountain zones. Choosing the correct parking area matters because different services use different entrances.

Emergency Department

Community visitors

Community visitors attending tours, events, meetings or interviews are generally directed to Ocean parking rather than inpatient-family parking.

How to make an appointment at Seattle Children’s

Referral timing

For clinic visits where an insurance referral is required, Seattle Children’s asks that the referral be received at least four days before the visit or the appointment may have to be canceled or rescheduled.

Seattle Children’s doctor timing: which doctor is available on which day?

Publishing a fabricated schedule such as “Dr. X works Monday 9–5” would be inaccurate. The correct approach is to publish actual clinic/service hours and use live scheduling for the named physician.

How to find a named doctor’s next available appointment

1. Call the specialty number.
2. Give the doctor’s full name.
3. Tell the scheduler whether this is a new patient, follow-up or second opinion.
4. Ask at which Seattle Children’s location the physician is currently seeing patients.
5. Ask for the next available date and time.
6. If the wait is long, ask whether another doctor in the same subspecialty can see the child earlier.

Emergency parking

• Parking is free.
• Use Forest Garage level P1.
• Take the elevator directly up to the Emergency Department.
• For immediate access during an emergency, short curbside use of the ED driveway is permitted.
• The Forest B Emergency entrance is open 24 hours.

How are patients seen?

Emergency patients are assessed according to medical urgency rather than simple arrival order. A child arriving later may be seen first when the condition is more serious.

What is the Emergency Room fee?

The hospital publishes a very large machine-readable standard-charge file. An actual ED bill depends on the evaluation level and additional services such as laboratory tests, imaging, medication, procedures, supplies, sedation, surgery or admission.

The hospital also warns that its standard-charge file is not a patient-specific out-of-pocket estimate.

If a child has Washington Apple Health/Medicaid, Seattle Children’s states that medically necessary covered services do not result in a patient charge.

Published Urgent Care facility charge

This is a facility charge. It is separate from the medical provider’s professional service and from additional tests or treatments.

Orthopedic Injury Urgent Care

This main-campus service treats children and teens from age 2 up to their 21st birthday for qualifying injuries that occurred within the previous 48 hours.

It treats appropriate fractures, cast problems, sprains and strains and can provide X-rays, casting and bracing.

Psychiatric urgent care and mental-health crisis options

Psychiatric Urgent Care

Seattle Children’s Psychiatric Urgent Care provides same-day support for children and teens ages 4 through 17 who need urgent mental-health care but may not need the Emergency Department.

When the Emergency Department is more appropriate

Use the ED or call 911 when the child:

• Is at immediate risk of serious self-harm
• Has made a suicide attempt requiring medical treatment
• Is at immediate risk of harming someone else
• Cannot participate in a safety plan
• Cannot care for basic health or safety needs

Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine Unit visiting

Parents, guardians and caregivers are not treated as ordinary visitors and may generally be with the child day or night.

Other visitors currently have PBMU visiting windows of:

• Saturday-Sunday: noon-7 p.m.

What is a facility charge?

The facility charge pays for hospital resources used during the clinic visit, including:

• Exam rooms
• Supplies
• Equipment
• Hospital support staff
• Operating costs of the hospital-based clinic

The medical provider’s professional service is billed separately.

More than one clinic appointment on the same day

Seattle Children’s states that when a child has more than one hospital-based clinic appointment on the same day, there is generally one clinic facility charge for that day, billed at the multiple-provider rate.

Seattle Children’s does not publish one universal pediatric specialist professional fee. The professional charge varies according to the clinician, visit complexity and services provided.

Common current accepted plans and programs

Kaiser Washington

Kaiser Core and Options members generally need referral and pre-authorization to use Seattle Children’s at the in-network benefit level. Seattle Children’s states that it is in network for Kaiser Access PPO members.

Premera

Most Premera plans are accepted except Medicare and Tahoma products. Referral, specialist-referral or waiver requirements may apply to specific networks.

Regence

Most Regence BlueShield plans are accepted except the High Performance Network, MultiCare Accountable Health Network and Medicare.

TRICARE

TRICARE and TriWest plans are accepted, but approved referral and authorization are required before scheduling many services.

When can you apply?

Applications can be submitted before, during or after care. Seattle Children’s says applicants receive an approval, denial or request-for-information letter within about 14 days after the application is received.

Billing process

1. Seattle Children’s bills the insurance plan.
2. The insurer applies contracted adjustments and determines the allowed amount.
3. Deductible, copay and coinsurance are applied according to the patient’s plan.
4. Seattle Children’s bills the family for the remaining patient responsibility.

Interest-free payment plan

Seattle Children’s offers monthly interest-free payment plans. The hospital states that no formal application or credit check is required for the standard payment-plan process.

Self-pay discount

A 25% discount is available when a child has no insurance or the insurance plan specifically excludes the needed service.

Seattle Children’s visitor rules and overnight caregivers

Inpatient caregivers

• Up to four adult caregivers may be in the room during applicable visiting hours.
• Two adults age 18 or older may stay overnight.
• Specific visiting hours vary by clinical unit.
• Everyone age 12 and older receives a photo name badge and must wear it.

Siblings

• Healthy siblings age 10 or older may visit.
• Siblings younger than 1 year may visit and may usually stay overnight with a caregiver.
• Other siblings generally cannot stay overnight unless they are an adult designated caregiver.

Clinic, Urgent Care and Emergency Department

The hospital recommends bringing only one parent/adult caregiver when possible, but currently allows up to 4 people to accompany the patient. A sibling under age 1 does not count toward that total.

Surgery Center

Up to 2 parents or adult caregivers may accompany the patient before and after the procedure. A sibling younger than 1 may accompany the family and does not count toward the two-adult limit; other siblings are generally not allowed unless they are an adult designated caregiver.

Respiratory isolation

For some respiratory-isolation patients, up to four adult caregivers can be designated, but only two may be in the room at once and two may stay overnight. Siblings are generally not permitted in those rooms unless they are adults designated as caregivers.

Masking

Seattle Children’s currently recommends medical masks throughout hospital and clinic areas. Masks are specifically required in Emergency Department waiting areas and are recommended when anyone has respiratory symptoms.
