What can the Children’s ER treat?

Randall Children’s Emergency Department can evaluate children with illnesses and injuries ranging from routine pediatric emergencies to severe trauma and critical illness.

• Serious breathing difficulty.
• Severe asthma attacks.

• Dehydration.
• Significant fractures or injuries.
• Head injuries.
• Severe burns.
• Motor-vehicle or bicycle injuries.

Behavioral or mental-health emergency

Legacy states that minors experiencing a mental-health emergency should first be evaluated by a pediatric provider before going to Unity Center for Behavioral Health. For an immediate danger or life-threatening crisis, call 911.

The trauma team can include:

• Trauma-trained nurses.
• Neurosurgeons.

Family facilities in the PICU

• Private patient room and bathroom.
• Sleeping space for two family members in each room.

PICU visitor rules

• All visitors check in with hospital security.
• Parents/guardians are welcome day and night.
• Other visitors generally use the 9 a.m.–9 p.m. schedule.
• The unit normally allows two to four visitors age 18 or older at a time, with at least one parent present.
• The nurse or doctor can reduce the number of visitors based on the child’s condition.
• Siblings younger than 18 must remain with an adult.
• Visitors must be free from illness.

The NICU can care for extremely premature and critically ill infants and provides access to pediatric surgical subspecialties, respiratory support, rehabilitation, feeding/nutrition services and advanced neonatal medicine.

NICU family rules

• Visitors must be healthy and free from illness.
• Siblings must remain with an adult.
• Families should respect privacy when taking photographs or video.
• NICU staff cannot disclose information about other babies or families.

KIDS Team mobile ICU

Randall Children’s KIDS Team provides specialized neonatal and pediatric transport by ground and air throughout the Pacific Northwest.

The Family Birth Center provides care ranging from lower-risk pregnancy and midwifery to high-risk maternity care requiring maternal-fetal medicine and immediate neonatal support.

After surgery

Children typically move to the Post Anesthesia Care Unit to wake after anesthesia. Parents are encouraged to be with their child during recovery when appropriate.

Before discharge, the nurse provides instructions covering home care, activity, diet and prescribed medicines. Randall Children’s also states that families can have prescriptions filled at The Apothecary at Legacy Emanuel.

For eligible day-surgery patients, the hospital may call 24–48 hours after discharge to check how the child is recovering.

No appointment is required for the walk-in service. The clinic is intended for new or suspected fractures, sports injuries and other appropriate bone/joint problems. Same-day and next-day appointments may also be available.

Legacy does not publish one universal fee covering every Randall Children’s physician. Your cost can depend on:

Security screening

Patients and visitors must pass through a metal detector and consent to a bag search before entry.

Prohibited items include:

• Weapons, even when accompanied by a carrying permit.
• Sharp objects.
• Illegal substances.

PICU visiting

Parents and guardians may visit day or night. Other PICU visitors generally use 9 a.m.–9 p.m. hours.

Siblings

PICU siblings younger than 18 must remain with an adult. NICU sibling visits also require adult supervision. Families should check with the bedside nurse before bringing siblings because infection-control restrictions can change.

When not to visit

Do not visit when ill. Babies and medically fragile children can be particularly vulnerable to infection.

How long can an Oregon request take?

Legacy asks patients to allow up to 30 days for Oregon facility requests, although the department says it makes every effort to complete requests sooner.

Birth certificates

Hospitals do not issue certified birth certificates. Birth-certificate requests are handled through the appropriate Oregon vital-records authority rather than through the hospital medical-record department.

Patients choose meals from a hospital menu. Guests can order from a separate menu. The campus also includes a cafeteria, café, coffee cart, vending machines and an espresso/snack bar at Randall Children’s.

Flowers and balloons

Mail, flowers and balloons can be delivered to patient rooms or forwarded to a home address after discharge. Flowers and plants are not permitted in critical-care areas. Use Mylar balloons only because of latex-allergy concerns.

The Portland East House is within walking distance of Randall Children’s and provides temporary lodging and family support for eligible families of seriously ill or injured children.

Rehabilitation patients can receive individualized combinations of:

• School sessions during the academic year.
• Caregiver training.
• Discharge planning.

Inpatient Rehab is on the 8th floor. Families enter through the main Randall Children’s entrance and check in with security. Parking Structure 4 is across from the children’s hospital entrance.
