Texas Children’s doctor timing: which day does a specific doctor work?

Texas Children’s does not publish a permanent weekly schedule for every doctor. A department being open Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. does not mean every physician is there every day.

Individual physicians can rotate among:

  • Outpatient clinic
  • Hospital rounds
  • Operating rooms
  • Procedures
  • Emergency or on-call coverage
  • West Campus
  • The Woodlands
  • Specialty Care sites
  • Research and teaching

Emergency Center construction through 2027

Texas Children’s is expanding the Medical Center Emergency Center. Construction is expected to continue through November 2027. The ER remains fully operational.

Texas Children’s currently recommends:

  • Allowing an extra 10–15 minutes for travel and parking.
  • Using West Tower valet when helpful.
  • Following construction and valet signage around Bellows Drive and West Tower.

Is there a live ER wait time?

Texas Children’s publishes historical “door-to-doctor” performance rather than a guaranteed real-time waiting time.

For January-March 2026, the Medical Center Emergency Center reported an average door-to-doctor time of 96 minutes.
That is a historical quality measure—not the wait you should expect today. Emergency patients are prioritized according to medical urgency, arrivals and hospital capacity.

How much does the Texas Children’s ER cost?

There is no single fixed ER price. A visit can include:

  • Emergency facility charge
  • Physician services
  • Laboratory testing
  • X-ray, ultrasound, CT or MRI
  • Medication
  • IV therapy
  • Sedation
  • Procedures
  • Specialist consultation
  • Surgery
  • Admission

Use the hospital estimate process for scheduled care. Emergency treatment itself should not be delayed while trying to calculate a price.

Walk-ins

Walk-ins are accepted, but patient volume can limit same-day availability.

Urgent Care vs Emergency Center

Urgent Care
Minor illnesses and injuries that need prompt pediatric evaluation but are not clearly life-threatening.
Emergency Center
Severe breathing trouble, major trauma, severe bleeding, seizures with ongoing concern, altered consciousness, severe allergic reaction or other potentially life-threatening problems.

Self-pay billing

Texas Children’s Urgent Care uses three self-pay complexity tiers:

  • Tier 1: lower-complexity visit with limited point-of-care tests/procedures.
  • Tier 2: medium-complexity care such as catheterization, ear irrigation or certain prescription treatments.
  • Tier 3: higher-complexity care such as X-ray, IV fluids, sutures, splinting, injectable medication or wound care.

The current public page describes the tiers but does not publish one fixed dollar amount for each tier. Outside laboratory work may produce a separate bill.

Virtual Care

Texas Children’s Virtual Care currently advertises a self-pay option starting at $175. Insurance copays vary.

If Virtual Care directs the child into a Texas Children’s Urgent Care for follow-up related to that virtual encounter, Texas Children’s states that a second appointment fee is not charged.

Texas Children’s doctor fees, facility fees and cost estimates

There is no one universal Texas Children’s specialist consultation price. The amount depends on the clinic, physician service, hospital facility charge, testing and insurance benefits.

Facility-fee change

Texas Children’s states that beginning October 1, 2025, it reduced hospital-based facility fees and says those fees are approximately 20% below the average of the top 10 pediatric hospitals.

Which visits can have a facility fee?

Most specialty visits in hospital-based outpatient clinics can include a facility fee.

Which visits are not subject to the hospital facility fee?

  • Texas Children’s Pediatrics primary-care visits
  • Texas Children’s Urgent Care visits
  • Telehealth / video visits

Multiple doctors in one hospital-based clinic on the same day

If a child sees more than one provider in the same hospital-based clinic on the same day, Texas Children’s says only one facility fee is charged. Separate hospital-based clinics can each generate their own facility fee.

Important financial-assistance rules

Editorial verification note: Texas Children’s publishes detailed department locations and many clinic hours, but it does not publish a dependable permanent weekly rota for every physician or one universal patient-specific doctor or Emergency Center fee. This guide therefore provides current physician rosters, clinic contacts, department hours, insurance information, 2026 parking rates, financial-assistance terms and other verifiable patient information without inventing doctor schedules or prices.
