What is inside the pediatric Emergency Center?

Texas Children’s describes its Medical Center Emergency Center as the largest pediatric emergency center in South Central Texas. It has 53 beds, including shock-trauma resuscitation beds, specialized isolation capacity and a dedicated sexual-assault examination room.

Level I pediatric trauma center

The Texas Medical Center hospital is the only freestanding Level I pediatric trauma center in the Houston region. Specialized pediatric surgeons and critical-care teams are available for severe injuries.

Emergency-room wait times

Emergency patients are triaged according to medical urgency rather than simply being treated in arrival order. A child with severe breathing trouble, shock, major trauma or another critical condition may be taken ahead of patients with less urgent problems.

How much does the Texas Children’s ER cost?

Texas Children’s does not publish one universal flat emergency-room fee. An ER bill can depend on the level of emergency evaluation, laboratory work, X-rays, CT/MRI, medications, supplies, procedures, specialists and other services.

Inpatient visitor list

For pediatric inpatient units in Legacy Tower and West Tower outside the NICU, families can identify up to eight healthy people on the visitation list for the stay.

During the normal visiting window, up to four people may generally be at the bedside at one time, including caregivers and family, although the clinical team can reduce the number when space or patient needs require it.

Pediatric Emergency Center visitors

Up to two healthy adult caregivers may accompany a child in the pediatric Emergency Center. Texas Children’s asks families to avoid bringing siblings when alternate childcare is available because ER rooms can be small.

Surgery and procedure areas

Up to two healthy adult caregivers may accompany the patient. Visitors under age 18 are generally not accommodated in surgery, procedure-suite and catheterization-lab areas.

NICU visitor rules

  • Up to six healthy adult visitors can be placed on the NICU visitor list.
  • Up to two healthy visitors may be at bedside at a time.
  • Sibling rules are more restrictive than standard inpatient units.
  • Health screening and seasonal infection restrictions may apply.
Visitor rules can temporarily change during flu, RSV, COVID-19 or other infection surges. Check the hospital’s current visitor page shortly before admission or visitation.

Can a parent stay overnight with a child?

Yes. Texas Children’s encourages a parent or another responsible adult to remain involved in the child’s care and, when possible, stay with the child.

Families should ask the child’s nurse for linens and other items needed for an overnight bedside stay. Sleeping arrangements differ by room type and intensive-care unit.
