The Houston Medical Center campus is large. The correct tower and garage depend on the service your child needs.

Pediatric emergency
Go to West Tower, 6621 Fannin Street. The Emergency Center is on Level 1 and operates 24/7.
Neurology / Orthopedics / GI
Many outpatient specialty clinics are in Wallace Tower, 6701 Fannin Street. Garage 16 is directly beneath Wallace Tower.
Heart Center
Heart Center clinics and major cardiac inpatient services are in Legacy Tower, 6651 Main Street. Garage 21 serves this part of campus.
Cancer / Hematology
The Lester and Sue Smith outpatient Cancer and Hematology clinic is on Wallace Tower Level 14. Inpatient hematology/oncology units are in West Tower.

What is inside the Medical Center pediatric ER?

Texas Children’s describes its Medical Center Emergency Center as the largest pediatric emergency center in South Central Texas. It currently includes 53 beds.

Who can accompany a child in the ER?

Current Texas Children’s visitor rules allow up to two healthy adult caregivers to accompany a pediatric Emergency Center patient. Because treatment rooms have limited space, the hospital recommends avoiding bringing siblings or other children when alternate childcare is available.

Construction through November 2027: access patterns around West Tower may change during the Emergency Center expansion. Follow current signs and valet instructions when you arrive.

There is no single flat “Texas Children’s emergency fee” that accurately represents every emergency visit.

An ER encounter can generate charges based on the complexity of care and the services actually used. Depending on the case, the bill can include:

Texas Children’s provides an online estimator based on the procedure, facility and the patient’s health-insurance information. The hospital says this is more useful for an individual family than looking only at gross standard charges.

Texas Children’s states that, beginning October 1, 2025, it reduced outpatient facility fees and structured them to be about 20% below the average of the U.S. News top 10 pediatric hospitals.

How to make an appointment at Texas Children’s Hospital

Know which specialty your child needs. Examples include cardiology, neurology, orthopedics, GI, oncology, pulmonology, urology or surgery.
Check referral requirements. Some clinics require a referral. For example, Texas Children’s Neurology states that it does not accept self-referrals for new patients.
Have insurance information ready. Ask whether prior authorization is needed before scheduling tests, imaging or a specialty visit.
Request a specific doctor if desired. Give the scheduler the physician’s name and ask which campus and dates currently have availability.
Confirm the tower and floor. Do not assume every appointment is at West Tower. Most outpatient specialties are concentrated in Wallace Tower.
Use MyChart to look for an earlier opening. Texas Children’s offers wait-list appointment notifications for many specialties.

Missed appointment rule

Texas Children’s asks families to cancel or reschedule as early as possible. The hospital states that after two consecutive no-show appointments with a specialty, the patient may no longer be able to schedule with that specialty. A no-show includes missing an appointment without cancelling at least 24 hours beforehand.

After visiting hours 2 adult caregivers

Up to two adult caregivers may stay at the bedside after general visiting hours.

During standard visiting hours, up to four healthy people may generally be at the bedside at one time, including caregivers, siblings and family members. Clinical staff may reduce that number when the patient’s condition or available space requires it.

Children must be supervised by an adult and are limited to approximately four hours of visitation per day under the current general inpatient policy.

Legacy Tower visitor list

Families in Legacy Tower may place up to eight healthy individuals on the patient’s visitation list for the duration of the stay, subject to screening and bedside limits.

NICU / Newborn Center

  • Up to 6 healthy adult visitors may be placed on the visitor list.
  • Up to 2 visitors may be at bedside at one time.
  • Siblings age 5 and older may visit under current rules.
  • Only one sibling is allowed at bedside at one time.
  • Sibling visits are limited to approximately four hours.
  • Siblings receive a temperature screening.

Surgery / procedure areas

Surgery, procedure suites and the cardiac catheterization lab allow up to two healthy adult caregivers with each patient. Visitors under 18 are not currently accommodated in these areas.

Pediatric Emergency Center

Up to two healthy adult caregivers may accompany each pediatric ER patient.

Patient-specific isolation, infection-control or space restrictions can override the general rules above. Follow the bedside care team’s instructions during the visit.
