Texas Children’s is expanding the Medical Center Emergency Center. Construction is expected to continue through November 2027. The ER remains fully operational.

Texas Children’s currently recommends:

Allowing an extra 10–15 minutes for travel and parking.
Using West Tower valet when helpful.

Texas Children’s publishes historical “door-to-doctor” performance rather than a guaranteed real-time waiting time.

For January-March 2026, the Medical Center Emergency Center reported an average door-to-doctor time of 96 minutes.

That is a historical quality measure—not the wait you should expect today. Emergency patients are prioritized according to medical urgency, arrivals and hospital capacity.

Emergency Center

Severe breathing trouble, major trauma, severe bleeding, seizures with ongoing concern, altered consciousness, severe allergic reaction or other potentially life-threatening problems.

Self-pay billing

Texas Children’s Urgent Care uses three self-pay complexity tiers:

Tier 1: lower-complexity visit with limited point-of-care tests/procedures.
Tier 2: medium-complexity care such as catheterization, ear irrigation or certain prescription treatments.
Tier 3: higher-complexity care such as X-ray, IV fluids, sutures, splinting, injectable medication or wound care.

The current public page describes the tiers but does not publish one fixed dollar amount for each tier. Outside laboratory work may produce a separate bill.

Virtual Care

Texas Children’s Virtual Care currently advertises a self-pay option starting at $175. Insurance copays vary.

If Virtual Care directs the child into a Texas Children’s Urgent Care for follow-up related to that virtual encounter, Texas Children’s states that a second appointment fee is not charged.

Current general pediatric inpatient rules

Up to eight healthy people may be placed on the visitation list for the stay.
Visitors are screened before entering the unit.
Up to four people may generally be at bedside during visiting hours.
Bedside staff may reduce the number when care or safety requires it.
Up to two adult caregivers may remain after visiting hours.
Children must be supervised by an adult.
Children may generally visit for up to four hours per day.

Infants accompanying a caregiver overnight

Breastfeeding siblings or children of a primary caregiver who are 12 months old or younger may remain under the current policy and do not count toward the two-adult overnight limit, but the parent must provide appropriate sleeping arrangements and supplies.

Pavilion for Women

Pavilion for Women inpatient visiting hours are also generally 8 a.m.-8 p.m., with up to four healthy people at bedside during visiting hours and up to two adult caregivers after hours.
