Level III NICU

St. Mary’s Level III NICU can care for critically ill newborns, including babies born as early as 22 weeks. The NICU has capacity for up to 38 fragile newborns.

NICU visitor rules

• Parents are welcome 24/7.
• General NICU visiting hours for other visitors are 6:30 a.m.-9 p.m..
• Parent/support person plus one visitor may generally be at bedside at one time.
• If only one parent is present, that parent may generally have two visitors.
• A parent must be present with visitors.
• Most visitors must be 18 or older; siblings are an exception under specific rules.
• Only parents may stay overnight in the NICU.
• Fresh flowers and plants are not allowed in NICU patient rooms.

NICU family support

The unit includes Ronald McDonald Family Rooms, family respite spaces, kitchen and laundry access. Angel Eye cameras can also allow authorized family members to view a baby remotely after parental consent and setup.

For planned orthopedic surgery, SSM Health says the hospital contacts the patient on the business day before surgery to review the arrival time.

Day-of-surgery arrival

• Use complimentary valet or the parking ramp across the street.

Park Street parking garage

Patient and visitor parking is available in the Park Street parking garage, across from the hospital’s main entrance on Brooks Street.

Family members may ask the information desk about available parking vouchers.

Outpatient Center ramp

If you park in the ramp connected to the SSM Health Outpatient Center, take the elevator to the main floor and cross Brooks Street to reach the main hospital.

Late-night security escort

Late-night visitors can request an escort to their vehicle by contacting the hospital switchboard and asking for Security.

The hospital is located on Madison’s south-central side near Park Street and Brooks Street. SSM Health identifies Madison Metro as a public-transportation option.

When using rideshare or taxi service, use the Brooks Street main entrance for the most straightforward patient drop-off unless your department gives different instructions.

General rules

• People with colds or infectious illnesses should postpone visits.
• Visitors with respiratory symptoms who cannot postpone may be asked to wear a mask.
• Patients with certain infections may still receive visitors with appropriate PPE.
• Keep noise and large gatherings to a minimum near patient rooms.

Adult Critical Care

Patients in adult critical-care areas including 2E ICU, 5W ICU and 5NW PCU are currently limited to four visitors at one time.

Labor & Delivery

Family Birth Suites allow four visitors at the bedside, with the patient’s support person and immediate children under 18 handled separately from that four-person count.

Parents are welcome 24/7, while general NICU visitor access is 6:30 a.m.-9 p.m. under the current published guidelines.

Patient room service

“Food for You” patient room service is available between 6:30 a.m. and 7 p.m.. SSM Health says meals are freshly prepared according to patient dietary requirements and are generally delivered within about 45 minutes after ordering.

Subway

The Subway restaurant on the 6th floor is currently listed as open daily from 9 a.m.-10 p.m..

Gift Shop

The Gift Shop carries flowers, personal-care items, clothing, books, magazines and other gifts. SSM Health currently offers free same-day gift-shop delivery to patient rooms.

Pastoral Care provides spiritual and emotional support to patients and families. Patients may also request help contacting their own faith leader.
