Sentara Norfolk General Emergency Department and Level I trauma care

The hospital provides around-the-clock emergency care and serves as a regional destination for major trauma, burns, stroke, neurologic emergencies and complex care.

Emergency Department Open 24/7

600 Gresham Drive
Norfolk, VA 23507

Directory phone: 757-388-3551

Trauma designation Level I Adult Trauma Center

Sentara describes the hospital as one of Virginia’s Level I trauma centers and the only Level I adult trauma center in Hampton Roads.

Burn and trauma services

Sentara Norfolk General also houses the region’s burn-trauma unit. The hospital is supported by the Nightingale Regional Air Ambulance program for critically ill and injured patients who require rapid transport to a higher level of care.

Emergency parking

The hospital has a limited Emergency Department parking area that must remain available for emergency patients. If the patient drives to the ED and is admitted, Sentara asks families to contact hospital Security at 757-388-3510 so the vehicle can be moved to the appropriate long-term area.

If a visitor drives a patient to the ED, the visitor should obtain a pass from the Emergency Department security guard. If the patient is admitted, the visitor should move the vehicle to a regular visitor lot to avoid towing.

ER wait times are not appointment times. Emergency patients are prioritized according to clinical urgency. Do not delay emergency care to search for a cheaper or shorter-wait option when symptoms may be life-threatening.

How to make an appointment at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital

There is no single number for every doctor. Hospital tests, physician-office appointments and specialty programs can have different scheduling routes.

Know whether you need a hospital service or a physician appointment. Imaging, EEG, laboratory testing and procedures may be scheduled differently from a visit with a cardiologist, neurosurgeon or other physician.
For hospital scheduling, call 757-388-2030. Have the physician order or referral available if the service requires one.
For a doctor visit, use the physician’s practice number. Sentara provider profiles often show a “New Patient Appointments” phone number.
Confirm insurance participation. Network participation can differ between the hospital, physician group and individual provider.
Ask about authorization. Imaging, surgery, specialty procedures and some outpatient services may require insurer approval.
Confirm where to park. A same-day outpatient procedure can qualify for the free outpatient lot, while a routine office visit may use regular visitor parking.

Sentara Norfolk General doctors, specialists and published availability

A tertiary hospital has a very large medical staff. Sentara does not publish one reliable Monday-through-Sunday hospital rota covering every physician. Below are current officially identified specialists and the most specific scheduling/office-day information that can be verified.

Doctor schedule warning: an outpatient practice day does not mean that a physician is physically available for walk-in care at Sentara Norfolk General all day. Surgery, emergencies, inpatient rounds, procedures and leave can change a doctor’s availability. Always make an appointment.

Why every hospital physician is not copied here: Sentara Norfolk General has a very large active medical staff spanning dozens of specialties. Sentara Norfolk General doctor fees, emergency fees and hospital prices

Sentara does not publish one flat physician consultation fee or one flat emergency room fee that applies to every patient.

There is no accurate single “Sentara Norfolk General ER fee.” Emergency charges depend on the clinical level of the visit and whether the patient needs laboratory testing, CT/MRI/X-ray, medication, procedures, specialists, trauma services or hospital admission.

How hospital charges are determined

Hospital charge Facility services

May include hospital space, supplies, nursing, equipment, testing and procedures.

Professional charge Doctor / clinician

Physician or other professional services may appear separately from the facility bill.

Your cost Depends on coverage

Deductible, copay, coinsurance, network status and payer-negotiated rates affect what you ultimately owe.

Get an official estimate before scheduled care

Sentara provides a hospital price-estimation tool for planned services and procedures. If you need help interpreting an estimate, the current Estimate Team phone is 757-233-4605.

Identify the exact service. “MRI” or “surgery” alone may be too broad. Use the test or procedure ordered by the doctor.
Select Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Prices can differ between facilities.
Enter insurance information where supported. An insured estimate is more useful than a generic gross charge.
Ask about separate physician bills. A facility estimate may not represent every professional charge.
Call the insurer. Verify deductible, coinsurance and authorization before elective care.

Insurance, billing and payment plans

Sentara accepts many insurance arrangements, but coverage can vary by plan and provider. Always verify the exact plan before scheduled care.

10. Where can I find the exact days a Sentara Norfolk General doctor works?
There is no hospital-wide public daily schedule for every physician. Some practice and Virginia Board of Medicine profiles publish office days. For example, Dana Adkins, M.D.’s current state profile lists Monday and Tuesday patient days at Sentara Neurosurgery Specialists in Norfolk, while cardiothoracic surgeon Clinton Kemp, M.D.’s profile lists Monday through Friday at 600 Gresham Drive. These are practice days, not a guarantee of hospital availability, so always call the doctor’s office before visiting.
