The hospital first opened in 1935 as Queens General Hospital. It soon absorbed Queensboro Hospital for Communicable Diseases and later became part of a larger municipal hospital complex that included Triboro Hospital for Tuberculosis. During the 1950s the facilities were consolidated into what became Queens Hospital Center.

A major modernization project produced the current hospital facility, which reopened in 2002. The present public-facing name is NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens.

In 2025, the hospital’s Pavilion building was renamed the Claire Shulman Pavilion in honor of former Queens Borough President Claire Shulman, who began her career as a nurse at the original Queens General Hospital.

Four major Centers of Excellence

NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens states that its Emergency Department operates 24/7 with emergency-trained physicians, nurses and ancillary staff. The department treats both relatively minor acute problems and serious illness or injury requiring hospital-level emergency care.

The Cardiology Department provides evaluation and treatment for cardiovascular disease and risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity, smoking history and family history.

The Queens Cancer Center has operated on the hospital campus since 2002 and serves as one of the facility’s major specialty centers.

Services include comprehensive oncology care, chemotherapy, diagnostic imaging, cancer screening, treatment planning, supportive care and multidisciplinary coordination. The center uses PET-CT and other imaging technologies for cancer evaluation.

The hospital also offers breast surgery as part of its cancer program and maintains a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence accredited by the American College of Radiology.

Newborn care

NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens has neonatology coverage in the hospital 24 hours a day. The Newborn Services Division includes neonatologists, neonatal nurse practitioners, physician assistants and neonatal nurses.

NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens operates a Behavioral Health Treatment Center with inpatient psychiatry, psychiatric emergency services and chemical-dependency treatment.

A hospital/facility bill can include room use, supplies, medications, equipment, diagnostic tests and facility charges. Professional services may be billed differently depending on the treating clinician and service.

Disputing a bill

The hospital advises patients disputing a bill to bring the bill and supporting documents to a financial counselor for review.

NYC Health + Hospitals states that no patient is denied access to care because of inability to pay. Discounted/sliding fees are available based on income and household size.
