NYC Health + Hospitals is the country’s largest municipal health care system. It provides inpatient, outpatient, emergency, primary, specialty, behavioral-health, long-term-care, home-based and virtual services to more than one million New Yorkers each year.

The system operates throughout Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island. The 11 acute-care hospitals are concentrated in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens, while Staten Island is served by other NYC Health + Hospitals services including Gotham Health and long-term-care locations.

Call 631-397-2273 (631-EXP-CARE) for virtual urgent care. NYC Health + Hospitals says the service is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and supports more than 200 languages.

Appropriate virtual concerns can include minor injuries, fever or flu symptoms, respiratory symptoms, anxiety, depression and certain substance-use concerns. Virtual ExpressCare is not a replacement for 911 in a life-threatening emergency.

What patients can do in MyChart

Patients can receive a MyChart activation code during a clinic visit. Patients who do not have an activation code can use the online signup process or call 1-844-920-1227.

Fastest route: MyChart

NYC Health + Hospitals says requesting records through MyChart is fast and easy, requires no separate ID upload for the MyChart request process and can deliver records directly into the patient’s portal.

Patients can also submit an electronic authorization. Identity verification is required, including photo identification. Requests involving sensitive information such as mental health treatment, substance-use treatment, HIV/AIDS or genetic testing require additional attention to the authorization fields.

Minor medical records

NYC Health + Hospitals explains that authorization requirements depend on the child’s age and the type of information requested. For some records involving minors ages 12–17, signatures from both the legally authorized parent/guardian and minor can be required. Behavioral-health and other confidential services can have different rules.

Radiology images

The system’s online Insurance Search includes major plans and products such as Aetna, MetroPlusHealth and many other commercial, government and managed-care products. However, one insurer can have several HMO, PPO, Medicare, Medicaid or employer products with different networks.

Visiting hours depend on the hospital, patient-care unit and the patient’s medical condition. Emergency rooms, intensive-care areas, labor and delivery, behavioral health, pediatrics and neonatal units can have their own rules.

Individual hospitals provide language-assistance and accessibility services. For example, Jacobi states that interpreter services are available in more than 150 languages. Virtual ExpressCare supports communication in more than 200 languages, including American Sign Language support.
