Elective induction

If an elective induction is scheduled, Lawrence asks patients to call Labor & Delivery at (978) 683-4000, ext. 2272 on the morning of the induction before leaving home. High delivery volume can occasionally require an elective procedure to be rescheduled.

Labor & Delivery visitors

  • Laboring patients may have two support people.
  • Support people must be 18 or older.
  • The two support people cannot rotate or trade with other visitors during Labor & Delivery.
  • No additional visitors are permitted in Labor & Delivery under the current posted policy.

2026 Merrimack Health consolidation

In April 2026, Merrimack Health announced a plan to consolidate maternity and neonatal services from Methuen into Lawrence Hospital, subject to the Massachusetts regulatory process, with an anticipated August 2026 transition. Patients whose prenatal care began through Methuen should confirm their final delivery location directly with their obstetric team.

The Santagati Center for Surgery provides modern operating rooms and perioperative services at the Lawrence campus.

Surgical specialties include

  • General surgery.
  • Orthopedic surgery.

  • Bariatric surgery.
  • Lithotripsy for kidney stones.

Robotic surgery routing

Merrimack Health’s newest da Vinci 5 robotic surgery program is at Methuen Hospital, not Lawrence Hospital. Patients scheduled for robotic general, urologic, gynecologic or thoracic procedures should verify which Merrimack Health hospital their surgeon selected.

Before surgery

  • Confirm the exact hospital campus.
  • Confirm your arrival time.
  • Follow fasting rules exactly.
  • Ask which medications should be taken or held.
  • Bring photo ID and insurance information.
  • Bring advance-directive documents when applicable.
  • Arrange a responsible adult driver when required after outpatient anesthesia.

Cancer Care at Lawrence Hospital

Lawrence Hospital’s cancer program uses a multidisciplinary model and collaborates with specialists from Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

  • Medical oncology coordination.

  • Urologic cancer treatment.
  • ENT/head and neck treatment.
  • Neurosurgical care.

Radiation oncology update

In July 2026, Dana-Farber announced a proposal to re-establish a joint radiation-oncology clinic with Merrimack Health at the Methuen Hospital campus. Do not assume radiation treatment is delivered at the Lawrence campus; confirm the treatment address with the oncology team.

Infusion Therapy

The Lawrence campus directory lists an Infusion Therapy Treatment Center in the Level 1 Ambulatory Care Center at 1 General Street.

Lawrence Hospital Visiting Hours & Current Rules

Current posted general visiting hours: noon-7 p.m.

The hospital’s public visitor page still identifies the current general policy as effective May 12, 2023, with respiratory-illness precautions updated more recently. Because the page remains the hospital’s active visitor guidance, this guide uses those posted hours.

Do not visit when sick

Visitors should not enter when experiencing symptoms such as:

  • Fever.
  • Cough.
  • Rash.
  • Vomiting.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Other significant respiratory or infectious symptoms.

Masking

The hospital currently strongly encourages facility-issued masking in clinical-care areas when respiratory activity is elevated, although general masking is not always mandatory. Patients with respiratory symptoms may be instructed to mask.

Labor & Delivery

Labor & Delivery has its own stricter policy: two fixed adult support people are permitted during labor, with no additional general visitors.

ICU, maternity, emergency, behavioral-health and isolation situations can have different visitor limits. Call (978) 683-4000 and ask for the patient’s unit when visiting rules determine whether you should travel.

Lawrence Hospital Doctor Fees, ER Costs & Price Estimates

Lawrence Hospital does not publish one universal physician visit fee, ER fee, MRI fee or surgery price that accurately predicts every patient’s out-of-pocket responsibility.

Why your cost differs

Your final responsibility can depend on:

  • Hospital/facility charges.
  • Physician professional charges.
  • Radiologist interpretation.
  • Pathology.
  • Anesthesia.
  • Lab tests.
  • Imaging.
  • Medication and supplies.
  • Insurance deductible.
  • Copayment.
  • Coinsurance.

Cost Estimator hotline

Lawrence Hospital Cost Estimate (978) 683-4000, ext. 8360

Lawrence can provide a pricing range for planned care based on comparable historical services. An estimate is not a guaranteed final bill.

If you have insurance

The hospital advises insured patients to also contact the insurer directly using the member-services number on the insurance card because the insurer controls:

  • Network status.
  • Deductible balance.
  • Copay.
  • Coinsurance.
  • Referral requirements.
  • Prior authorization.

Price transparency

Lawrence Hospital publishes its federally required machine-readable pricing information and 300 shoppable services. Those files are not the same thing as your personal estimate.

Insurance, MassHealth & Network Verification

Insurance networks change frequently, and Merrimack Health’s current patient pages emphasize confirming benefits directly with the health plan rather than relying on a static insurer-name list.

Lawrence participates in major Massachusetts coverage systems

Current hospital resources specifically address coverage involving programs such as:

  • MassHealth.
  • Massachusetts Health Connector plans.
  • Health Safety Net.
  • Children’s Medical Security Program.
  • Mass General Brigham MassHealth ACO.
  • Other private/commercial insurance products.

MassHealth ACO

Lawrence Hospital participates with the Mass General Brigham MassHealth ACO in partnership with local practices, while also continuing to serve patients in other community ACO arrangements.

Ask these questions before elective care

  1. Is Merrimack Health Lawrence Hospital in network?
  2. Is my physician in network?
  3. Is the anesthesiologist or imaging specialist in network?
  4. Do I need a PCP referral?
  5. Does this procedure need prior authorization?
  6. What deductible remains?
  7. What copay or coinsurance applies?

Certified application assistance

Hospital financial counselors can help eligible uninsured or underinsured patients understand public-assistance applications and coverage options.

Medical Hardship

Massachusetts Medical Hardship can be important for patients whose medical bills are very large relative to household income even when they do not fit ordinary low-income categories.

Lawrence publishes separate Financial Assistance and Self-Pay Discount policies. Exact eligibility depends on residency, household income, insurance status, available public programs and the specific bill. Call Financial Counseling rather than assuming a percentage from an old policy copy.

Emergency treatment

Lawrence’s current credit-and-collection policy states that medically necessary emergency care is provided regardless of the patient’s ability to pay.

  • Other independent practitioners involved in the visit.

A separate professional statement does not automatically mean the hospital billed the same service twice.

CT/MRI authorization

Many CT and MRI exams require insurance prior authorization. A physician order alone does not guarantee that insurance authorization has been completed.

Pharmacy & Prescriptions After Discharge

Lawrence Hospital has hospital pharmacy services supporting inpatient and clinical care. However, the current public Merrimack Health Lawrence pages do not clearly publish a patient-facing walk-in retail pharmacy at 1 General Street with dependable public pickup hours.

Before discharge: ask the nurse or prescribing clinician which pharmacy your prescription was sent to, whether it has already been transmitted electronically, when the first dose is due and whether any medication requires prior authorization.

Before leaving with a new medicine

  • Confirm the medication name.
  • Confirm dose and frequency.
  • Ask when the next dose is due.
  • Ask which prior medications should be stopped.
  • Confirm the retail pharmacy receiving the prescription.
  • Ask what to do if insurance rejects the prescription.
