Sexual-assault examination

West Tennessee Healthcare identifies the JMCGH Emergency Department as the region’s location for Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) services.

ER parking

Limited parking is available directly outside the Emergency Department entrance. The hospital asks families to move vehicles from those limited spaces when appropriate so they remain available for incoming emergency patients.

Longer-term visitor parking is available free in Garage 1 at 745 W. Forest Avenue.

How to make an appointment

Jackson General itself is primarily a hospital; outpatient physicians are often scheduled through West Tennessee Medical Group or one of the connected specialty centers.

Identify the specialty you need. Examples include cardiology, neurology, neurosurgery, oncology, gastroenterology, OB/GYN or primary care.
Call the specialty clinic directly. Clinic-specific numbers provide better availability information than the general hospital line.
Check MyChart. Many West Tennessee Medical Group providers allow online scheduling through MyChart.
Confirm whether a referral is required. Perinatology/high-risk pregnancy and some specialty services require a provider referral before an appointment.
Verify the actual building. Your doctor’s office may be at 700 W. Forest Avenue, 720 W. Forest Avenue, the Heart & Vascular Center or another nearby Jackson clinic rather than 620 Skyline Drive.
Ask for the doctor’s actual current clinic day. Appointment sessions change, so live scheduling is more reliable than a permanent weekday timetable.

OB hospitalists are onsite 24/7

West Tennessee Healthcare states that OB/GYN hospitalists are available onsite 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They can evaluate labor, review fetal-heart monitoring and test results, respond to emergencies and provide delivery care when the patient’s personal obstetrician is unavailable.

Doula services

JMCGH offers doula support without requiring a referral, subject to availability. The program can include:

  • Two prenatal appointments.
  • Support during labor and birth.
  • Birth-plan preparation.
  • Labor-position coaching.
  • Breastfeeding support.
  • Two to three postpartum appointments.

Because availability is limited, the hospital recommends contacting the program early in pregnancy.

Pre-registration — “Storking”

After the fifth month of pregnancy, families are encouraged to pre-register for delivery. The hospital refers to this as “Storking.” No appointment is required to complete the process in Admitting during regular business hours.

Lactation support

Lactation care is provided by International Board Certified Lactation Consultants and Certified Lactation Counselors. After discharge, mothers may contact lactation staff for support at no charge.

Lactation / maternity support: 731-541-2229.

Family bonding time

The Mother-Baby Unit offers daily family bonding time from 12 p.m.–2 p.m. to provide protected quiet time for the new family.

  • Physical therapists.

Current hospital provider listings include pediatric hospitalists such as Christy Minor, MD, Cynthia D. Cross, MD and pediatric physician Amy E. Johnson, MD.

Hospital-based pediatricians and pediatric hospitalists provide inpatient coverage; they are not generally booked like an ordinary pediatric primary-care office.

Surgery, robotic procedures and pre-admission

Jackson-Madison County General Hospital provides major inpatient and outpatient surgery and uses multiple da Vinci robotic systems for eligible procedures.

Examples of surgical services

  • Cardiothoracic surgery.
  • General surgery.
  • Hernia repair.
  • Colon surgery.
  • Gynecologic surgery.
  • Hysterectomy.
  • Urologic procedures.
  • Prostate surgery.
  • Orthopedic procedures.
  • ENT procedures.
  • Ophthalmology.
  • Plastic surgery.

How surgery is scheduled

The surgeon’s office schedules the procedure. After a date is set, the hospital may require pre-admission or a pre-admission visit.

Pre-admission location

For patients who need an in-person pre-admission visit, the department is on the first floor of the newer hospital tower. The hospital recommends approaching from Skyline Drive and using either nearby surface parking or Garage 1.

What to bring

  • Photo ID.
  • Insurance card.
  • Updated medication and dosage list.
  • Allergy information.
  • CPAP device if the surgery team tells you to bring it.
  • Eyeglasses/contact case if needed.
  • Any prosthetic device the surgical team needs to know about.
  • Responsible driver when anesthesia/sedation requires one.
Medication instruction: the hospital’s joint-surgery guidance specifically instructs some JMCGH surgical patients to bring a medication list rather than bringing home medications into the hospital. Always follow the instructions from your own surgeon/pre-admission team.

Jackson General ER fees, doctor fees and case charges

There is no single flat Emergency Department price or universal physician consultation fee.

What can appear on an ER bill

  • Emergency Department facility charge.
  • Emergency physician professional service.
  • Laboratory testing.
  • EKG.
  • X-ray.
  • CT or other imaging.
  • Medication.
  • Medical supplies.
  • Procedures.
  • Specialist consultation.
  • Observation.
  • Hospital admission.

Why doctor fees are separate

West Tennessee Healthcare explicitly states that physician and other professional-service charges are typically separate from hospital charges. A cardiology consultation, GI visit, oncology appointment, surgical consultation and hospital-based emergency physician service can therefore generate different charges.

No fake “consultation fee.” If the hospital or physician practice does not publish a fixed cash price for a specific appointment, this guide does not invent one. Ask the practice for the expected service code and use the hospital estimate process when applicable.

How to estimate your hospital cost before care

Patient Financial Assistance Services can provide estimate information.

Patient Financial Services 731-541-8730

Use the hospital price estimator. West Tennessee Healthcare also publishes Jackson General standard charges.
Call your insurance company. Ask about your deductible, coinsurance, copay and network status.
Ask about separate physician fees. Surgeon, anesthesia, radiology and other professional fees may not be included in one hospital estimate.

Uninsured / self-pay discount at Jackson General

Current published JMCGH uninsured discount: 70%. West Tennessee Healthcare’s current self-pay policy lists Jackson-Madison County General Hospital at a 70% uninsured discount from gross hospital charges, leaving a 30% self-pay balance before any other assistance for which the patient may qualify.

The uninsured discount is evaluated periodically under Tennessee law and can change. Other Patient Financial Assistance discounts may be applied after the uninsured discount when a patient qualifies.
