General Pediatrics

The General Pediatrics practice cares for about 13,000 patients through four color-coded care teams: Blue, Green, Orange and Yellow. Families can schedule routine, same-day, illness, injury, preventive, immunization and follow-up visits.

MyChart appointment and care functions

Families with proxy access to a child’s MyChart account can use the portal for non-urgent communication, appointment requests, medication refills and other account-supported functions.

School-based telemedicine

Who is treated?

The pediatric ED provides specialized emergency care to children 18 years old and younger. The department states that it treats more than 25,000 children each year.

Emergency physicians and specialists

The department is staffed by physicians board-certified in pediatrics—many also board-certified in pediatric emergency medicine—or emergency medicine physicians with special pediatric expertise. Pediatric emergency nurses and nurse practitioners have pediatric emergency training, and specialists are available for consultation at all times.

Child Life in the emergency department

Child Life specialists are available in the pediatric emergency setting daily from 2:00 p.m. to midnight to help children and families cope with procedures, anxiety and the hospital environment.

Pediatric emergency visitor rule

The current hospital visitor guidance allows two parents/guardians at a time with a pediatric emergency patient when department volume and safety permit.

Why a fixed doctor consultation fee cannot be quoted

A pediatric visit can involve different billing codes, levels of service, tests, vaccinations, imaging, procedures and professional services. Insurance deductibles, copays, coinsurance and network status also change what an individual family owes.

Why there is no single fixed ER fee

Emergency care is billed according to the services actually provided. A child needing examination only will not necessarily generate the same charges as a child who needs laboratory testing, imaging, medication, a procedure, specialist consultation or hospital admission.

The Pediatric Emergency Department states that families may be asked at discharge to review insurance information and pay an applicable copay. The amount depends on the insurance plan rather than one universal Golisano Children’s ER copay.

Important estimate limitation

UR Medicine explains that its estimates are not guarantees. Unexpected testing, procedures, complications or other services can change the final amount. The online hospital estimate can also exclude physician/provider fees that may be billed separately.

A six-floor visitor parking garage is attached to Golisano Children’s Hospital and Strong Memorial Hospital. Drivers can enter from the main hospital drive off Elmwood Avenue or from East Drive between Elmwood Avenue and Crittenden Boulevard.

The hospital also identifies the South Visitor Lot near Crittenden Boulevard and Kendrick Road, with its entrance on Kendrick Road.

Emergency Department parking

• Enter the Strong Memorial Hospital main drive and take the first right.
• An adjacent ED lot is available for emergency arrival.
• You may drop a child at the emergency entrance, but do not enter the ambulance bay.
• Once the child is settled, families may be asked to move the vehicle to hospital parking.
• The emergency department has an adjacent 39-space parking area for drivers bringing children for emergency care.

General visiting hours

Daily general visiting hours are 8:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m.. Visitors must show photo identification.

How many people can be at the bedside?

General guidance allows up to four visitors at the bedside at one time. The treatment team or unit leadership can reduce that to two people when needed for patient care, space, safety or unit conditions.

Can parents stay overnight?

Up to two parents/guardians may stay overnight depending on the unit. Some areas—including the NICU and Pediatric Surgical Center—provide sleeping accommodation for one parent.

Sibling visitors

Pediatric Surgical Center visitor rules

• Two parents or guardians are allowed at the bedside during the child’s visit.
• No sibling visitors under age 18 are permitted.
• Additional visitors wait in the Golisano Children’s lobby waiting area.
• The surgical center does not permit repeatedly switching visitors during the child’s stay.
• One parent is allowed overnight for surgical boarder patients.

Child Life Program

Child Life specialists help children and families prepare for and cope with hospitalization, medical procedures and unfamiliar healthcare experiences. The Child Life Office can be reached at (585) 275-9878.

Social Work

Pediatric social workers assist families with stress, care planning, resources, practical problems and community connections. Hospital guidance states that social work support is available throughout a child’s hospital stay 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Interpreter services

Interpreter support is available for families who need language or communication help. Strong Memorial Hospital states that Spanish and American Sign Language interpreters are on call 24 hours a day and telephone interpretation can cover more than 200 languages.

Ronald McDonald Family Room

A Ronald McDonald Family Room is located through the rear of the Golisano Children’s Hospital lobby and provides lounge space for families.

Food and nutrition

Hospitalized children receive meal-order support through Food and Nutrition Services. Parents can eat in the patient room when appropriate, but families are asked to be sensitive when a child is medically restricted from eating or drinking.

MyChart

UR Medicine MyChart provides secure access to health information and supports functions such as appointment requests, refill requests and non-urgent communication with the care team when enabled for the account.

For children, parent/guardian access can depend on the child’s age and applicable proxy-access rules.

Formal medical-record request

UR Medicine’s patient-access form includes options to obtain records through MyChart or request other forms of access. The form states that records uploaded to MyChart for a request may remain available there for a limited period, so families should download or save needed copies.

Financial assistance

UR Medicine offers financial assistance for qualifying patients who need help paying medical bills. Families who are uninsured, underinsured or concerned about a large planned-service balance should contact Financial Counseling before assuming that full listed hospital charges must be paid out of pocket.

From I-390 / south or east

UR Medicine’s directions route drivers from I-390 North to Exit 16 (West Henrietta Road), then north on West Henrietta Road and left onto Elmwood Avenue. The main hospital entrance and garage are on the left.

From the west

From the New York State Thruway, the hospital’s published route uses Exit 47, I-490 East and I-390 South toward East River Road/Kendrick Road and Crittenden Boulevard.

From Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport

The hospital’s route uses I-390 South toward Scottsville Road, then Elmwood Avenue. The main entrance and parking garage are accessible from Elmwood Avenue.
