UPMC Children’s Emergency Department: hours, entrance and pediatric trauma care
An attending-level pediatric emergency physician is on duty at all times.
UPMC Children’s Hospital, 4401 Penn Ave., Floor 1.
UPMC describes it as the region’s only Level I Regional Resource Pediatric Trauma Center.
No appointment is required for emergency evaluation.
Where is the ER entrance?
The Emergency Department is along the 44th Street side of the main hospital. Drivers approaching on Penn Avenue can turn at 44th Street for the ED entrance and emergency drop-off area.
The Penn Garage is the primary garage for outpatient families and Emergency Department visitors. The official campus parking map also identifies short-term ED parking close to the Emergency entrance.
What does the pediatric ER treat?
UPMC Children’s Emergency Medicine evaluates acute illnesses, worsening chronic conditions, injuries and trauma. The ED also has a Fast Track area for selected less-severe acute illnesses and injuries.
Pediatric medical and surgical subspecialists are available for complex emergencies, and the hospital coordinates ground and air transfers for children referred from other hospitals.
Emergency registration and copay
Patient Access is staffed in the ED 24/7. Registration staff verify demographic information, complete consent documentation and perform insurance eligibility verification. UPMC states that any applicable emergency-visit copayment is collected at discharge.
Referral requirement after an ER visit
UPMC notes that many insurance plans require a primary-care referral before or within 24 hours after an Emergency Department visit. Check your plan’s rules when practical.
How to make an appointment at UPMC Children’s Hospital
Many specialties support both online scheduling and telephone scheduling. Referral rules vary by specialty and insurance plan.

Doctor fees, emergency fees and hospital price estimates
UPMC publishes price-transparency data, but there is no reliable one-price answer for “how much does UPMC Children’s cost?” because patient responsibility depends heavily on the exact service and insurance benefits.
How to get a patient-specific estimate
Use this for an approximate out-of-pocket estimate for planned care. UPMC also provides a self-service estimator covering more than 300 common services.
UPMC Children’s publishes gross charges, discounted cash prices and payer-negotiated pricing data as required by federal hospital price-transparency rules.
Doctor consultation fee
UPMC Children’s does not publish one fixed consultation charge that applies to every pediatrician or specialist. A cardiology consultation, oncology visit, surgery consultation, new-patient visit, follow-up visit and diagnostic visit can be billed differently. Insurance copays and deductibles also vary.
Emergency fee
There is no single public flat ER price that can accurately represent every emergency visit. A simple evaluation and a complex trauma visit use different services and resources. Registration begins the billing process, insurance is checked, and any applicable copayment is collected at discharge.
Hospital charge vs. physician charge
Families may encounter hospital charges and professional/physician charges. UPMC Children’s telephone directory provides separate contacts:
| Billing question | Phone |
|---|---|
| Patient Business Services – hospital charges | 412-692-7800 |
| UPP – physician charges | 888-647-9600 |
| UPMC Patient Financial Services | 1-800-371-8359 |
| UPMC Customer Service | 1-844-591-5949 |
UPMC Children’s parking: garage rates, ED parking and valet
The Lawrenceville campus has approximately 1,400 on-campus garage spaces. The two most important garages for patients and visitors are the Mid-Campus Garage and Penn Garage.
Mid-Campus Garage
Primary parking for inpatient families and visitors. It can be entered from 44th or 45th Street. Protected walkways connect the garage to the hospital.
Penn Garage
Primarily used by outpatient families and Emergency Department visitors. Access is from 44th Street. Grape elevators connect the garage with outpatient services on Floors 1 through 4.
Standard garage rates
| Parking duration | Published rate |
|---|---|
| 0 to 3 hours | $4 |
| 3 to 6 hours | $7 |
| 6 to 8 hours | $10 |
| 8 to 24 hours | $20 |
Inpatient family parking
UPMC’s current patient/family handbook states that the Mid-Campus Garage is the main parking location for inpatient support persons and lists an inpatient family rate of $5 per day per vehicle, with up to two support persons per patient. Families of children hospitalized longer than 14 days are described as receiving free parking after day 14. Ask the Parking Desk in the Floor 1 Main Lobby for the current inpatient pass.
Valet parking
Valet service is available when required. Enter the hospital’s main drive from 45th Street. Valet payment is handled by the Floor 1 cashier near the Welcome/Information Center. After the Welcome Center closes at 10:30 p.m., valet-payment assistance is available from the 24-hour Public Safety desk in the Emergency Department.
Parking payment
- Pay stations are located near the Transformation Corridor entrance from Mid-Campus Garage.
- Penn Garage pay stations are near the Grape elevators on parking levels.
- UPMC states that garage pay stations accept cash and credit cards.
- Debit cards are not accepted at these pay stations.
EV charging
Two reserved EV charging spaces are published on Level 2 of Mid-Campus Garage.
Visiting hours, parent access and visitor badges
UPMC’s system-wide general visiting hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.. For UPMC Children’s inpatient pediatric units, parents are welcome to be with their children 24 hours a day unless medical or nursing staff advise otherwise.
UPMC Children’s current visitor information also states that visitation is limited to two people in inpatient areas, the Emergency Department, outpatient surgery and outpatient appointments. Unit-specific restrictions may apply.
Visitor badge rules
- Inpatient and surgical visitors must obtain an identification badge.
- Badges are issued at the Welcome/Information Center on Floor 1A from 7 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.
- They are also available through Admitting on Floor 1B.
- After hours, use the Patient Access desk in the Emergency Department.
- Visitors over age 18 entering inpatient areas or Same Day Surgery must provide valid photo ID.
- A confidentiality code is required to receive an inpatient visitor badge.
Badge colors
| Badge | Typical use |
|---|---|
| Yellow | Family Resource Center, certain outpatient services on Floors 6, 7 or 9, and surgery/procedure registration. |
| Pink | Inpatient units on Floors 4 through 9; typically paired with an access card. |
| White | Emergency Department and open-access areas on Floors 1 through 3. |
Children visiting
The current hospital visitor page states that visitors between ages 2 and 18 must be accompanied by an adult and be able to follow current masking requirements where applicable. Same Day Surgery has stricter rules: the current surgery guide states that siblings and other children under 18 are not permitted as surgery-day support persons.
Same Day Surgery: check-in, parking, calls and what to bring
5:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday, excluding holidays.
Department is published as open weekdays until 9 p.m.
Address, parking and general surgery-day information.
Before surgery
UPMC states that a preoperative history and physical generally must be completed within 30 days before surgery. The surgical team may also order blood work, EKG, x-ray, CT or other testing.
A Same Day Surgery nurse normally calls 2 to 3 days before surgery. UPMC asks families to have medication lists, pharmacy contact information, allergy information, medical history and accommodation/interpreter needs available for this call.
When will I get the surgery time?
The hospital’s 2026 surgery guide says families are contacted between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. on the business day before surgery with the procedure time and required arrival time. If you have not been contacted by 5 p.m., call 412-692-5242.
Where to park and check in
- Park in the Children’s Hospital Penn Avenue Garage on 44th Street.
- Bring the parking ticket with you.
- Use the Main Entrance or Grape elevators from the Penn Garage.

- Follow signs for Same Day Surgery.
What to bring

- Required medical and surgical paperwork.
- Legal guardianship paperwork or court orders when applicable.
- Medication and allergy information.
- Glasses or retainer storage cases if needed.
- A comfort item such as a stuffed animal or toy when appropriate.
- CPAP equipment if used at home and requested for the procedure.
- Home inhalers; UPMC says other necessary prescription medication is provided by the hospital pharmacy.

Who can request records?
UPMC states that copies can be released after receipt of signed authorization from the parent, legal guardian or patient when the patient is legally authorized to make the request. Records can be provided in electronic or paper form.
Medical record fees
UPMC Children’s states that reasonable cost-based copy fees may apply. Third-party record requests use the Pennsylvania Department of Health medical-record fee schedule. Because the charge depends on the request and format, there is no single correct flat record-copy fee for every request.
Billing, financial assistance and insurance
When is the hospital bill sent to insurance?
UPMC Children’s states that the hospital bill is generally submitted to the insurance carrier approximately one to two weeks after discharge. Families without insurance or without sufficient insurance information on file may receive the bill directly.
Insurance and authorization
UPMC Children’s accepts most major health insurance plans and participates with many managed-care plans. Families should bring:
- Current insurance card.
- Required primary-care referral.
- Any insurer authorization for scheduled services.
- Information about a required second opinion if the plan requires one.
For a scheduled non-emergency admission, UPMC advises families to contact the insurer as soon as the hospitalization is scheduled. Failure to obtain required authorization can result in greater patient financial responsibility.
Highmark and major insurance
UPMC states that UPMC Children’s locations, Children’s Express Care and UPMC Children’s Community Pediatrics participate in-network with major insurers, including Highmark. Network participation can still vary by the exact insurance product, so verify your child’s specific plan before elective care.
Payment help
UPMC Patient Financial Services can provide information about payment plans, financial assistance, medical-assistance screening and price estimates. Call 1-800-371-8359.
