Los Angeles, CA 90027

Main entrance

The regular Main Campus entrance is on Sunset Boulevard. Families arriving for outpatient clinics, admissions or general hospital visits can enter through the main hospital and check with the front desk for directions.

Emergency Department entrance

Do not depend on the normal main entrance for the fastest ER drop-off. CHLA directs Emergency Department traffic to the dedicated entrance on the east side of the hospital using Lyman Place.

Drivers should follow the red “Emergency Department” signs from Sunset Boulevard. The ED check-in area is on the ground floor of the Anderson Pavilion.

Emergency drop-off

Entering the visitor garage from Lyman Place provides access to three short-term Emergency Department drop-off spaces. CHLA limits these spaces to approximately 15 minutes.

Walking into the ED from the hospital

A family already inside the main hospital can ask the front desk for directions, take the appropriate elevator to the ground floor and proceed to the Emergency Department lobby.

How much does CHLA Emergency care cost?

There is no one flat CHLA Emergency Department fee that applies to every child.

The final hospital charge can vary according to:

  • Emergency-service level
  • Laboratory testing
  • X-ray, ultrasound, CT or MRI
  • Medication and IV therapy
  • Supplies
  • Sedation
  • Procedures
  • Surgery
  • Admission
  • Length of stay

Physician professional charges are not included in CHLA’s public online hospital cost-estimator calculations.

How to make an appointment at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles

The scheduling process depends heavily on insurance. Many PPO and EPO patients can request specialty appointments directly online, while HMO, Medi-Cal and CCS patients commonly need referral or authorization paperwork first.

PPO and EPO

CHLA currently allows direct online appointment requests for many specialties, including:

Cardiology
Neurology
Neurosurgery
Orthopedics
Pediatric Surgery
Gastroenterology
Endocrinology
Pulmonology
Urology
Dermatology
Rheumatology
Behavioral Health

HMO

A referral and insurance authorization from the child’s pediatrician/primary care doctor are generally required before a specialist appointment can be scheduled.

Medi-Cal

A Treatment Authorization Request may be required for non-emergency specialty care. Out-of-state Medicaid patients should check their own state’s authorization requirements before traveling to Los Angeles.

California Children’s Services

CCS services may require a Service Authorization Request before non-emergency care.

CHLA doctor timing: which days do individual doctors work?

CHLA does not publish one permanent Monday-through-Sunday work schedule for every pediatric specialist. Hospital clinic hours are not the same thing as an individual doctor’s weekly schedule.

A physician may divide time among outpatient clinics, surgery, inpatient service, procedures, research, teaching and CHLA’s regional specialty centers.

Clinic hours CHLA does publish

  1. Call the specialty clinic.
  2. Give the physician’s full name.
  3. State whether this is a new patient, follow-up or second opinion.
  4. Ask whether the doctor sees patients at Sunset or a satellite location.
  5. Ask for the earliest available date and time.

CHLA doctor fees, facility charges and cost estimates

There is no single flat CHLA pediatric specialist fee. Hospital charges and physician professional charges are billed separately, and CHLA’s public online cost-estimator tool currently does not include physician costs.

What the hospital estimate includes

The CHLA estimator can account for hospital charges connected with:

  • Medical and surgical hospital services
  • Medications
  • Room charges
  • Radiology
  • Laboratory services
  • Other hospital resources

What it does not include

Physician professional charges are not currently included in CHLA’s estimator.

A physician bill can include services from:

  • Attending physicians
  • Surgeons
  • Anesthesiologists
  • Radiologists
  • Pathologists
  • Fellows and other physicians participating in care

Self-pay discount

For scheduled procedures and services, CHLA currently states that self-pay families receive a 40% discount from final hospital charges.

Price estimate number

If a service is not available through the online estimator, call a CHLA financial counselor at 323-361-5941.

An estimate is not a guaranteed final bill. Unplanned tests, longer hospitalization, complications or additional treatment can change the final amount.

Out-of-network or self-pay?

Call a CHLA hospital financial counselor at 323-361-2325 for coverage questions and a rate quote.

An insurer name on the list does not guarantee that every plan, medical group or physician is in network. Verify the exact plan product and authorization before planned care.

Uninsured or underinsured families with qualifying income at or below 400% of the Federal Poverty Level may qualify for full Charity Care for eligible emergency or medically necessary hospital services.
