Does Blythedale Children’s Hospital have an Emergency Room?

Blythedale should not be treated as a general walk-in pediatric ER. Its official services focus on post-acute rehabilitation, Day Hospital, outpatient rehabilitation and long-term complex care.

Blythedale does provide 24-hour, seven-day-a-week in-house pediatric physician coverage for children admitted to the hospital. Its respiratory team also provides 24/7 inpatient services, including critical-care ventilators and rapid-response support.

That capability allows Blythedale to accept medically fragile children much earlier after an ICU or NICU stay than a typical rehabilitation facility, but it does not turn the hospital into a public Emergency Department for new illnesses or injuries.

If your child is already admitted

Tell the nurse or inpatient care team immediately if your child develops a new urgent problem. Blythedale has onsite pediatric medical coverage around the clock.

If your child is at home

For life-threatening symptoms, call 911. For other urgent issues, use the emergency or urgent-care instructions given by your child’s treating physician.

The Robert Stone Day Hospital is for children who live at home but need intensive medical supervision, nursing, rehabilitation and education beyond what ordinary outpatient therapy or school can provide. Referral phone: 914-831-2458.
