Appointments, referrals, and what to expect at a teaching hospital
The UC Davis VMTH is open to the public. Pet owners can schedule directly, and primary veterinarians can also make referrals to specialty services.
Arrival workflow, check-in, free client parking, and safety rules
Knowing where to park and how to check in can prevent delays, especially because small-animal services use two different reception areas.
Small Animal Reception A
Park in Lot 50, follow “Emergency” signs to the Small Animal Clinic entrance, and check in at the reception desk on the 2nd floor. Use this for emergency, behavior, dentistry/oral surgery, internal medicine, neurology, nutrition, ophthalmology, orthopedic surgery, and Reception A services.
Small Animal Reception B
Park in Lot 55, enter the glass-front Center for Companion Animal Health building, and check in on the 1st floor. Use this for cardiology, community surgery, companion exotics, dermatology, oncology, primary care, and sports medicine/rehab.
Large Animal Reception
Park in Lot 51, use trailer parking in the dirt section when needed, and proceed through the double glass doors labeled Large Animal Clinic. Register at the 1st-floor reception desk.
License plate registration
Parking is free in designated client parking spaces, but UC Davis says clients must register the vehicle at the reception area with license plate information.
| Animal type | Control requirement from client-rights PDF | Practical reason |
|---|---|---|
| Dogs | Dogs must be kept on non-retractable leashes in waiting rooms or public spaces. | Short, secure control helps prevent slips, bites, stress, and contact with other animals. |
| Cats and smaller animals | Cats and smaller animals must be kept in safe carriers. | Carriers reduce escape risk, stress, injury, and contact with dogs or unfamiliar animals. |
| Horses and llamas/alpacas | Horses and llamas/alpacas must be haltered and under control. | Large animals can injure themselves, owners, staff, or other animals if uncontrolled. |
| Livestock | Livestock must remain in trailers or vehicles until unloaded with VMTH staff. | Staff may need to control traffic, biosecurity, safety, isolation, or unloading routes. |

Companion exotic animal care, wildlife notes, and species preparation
UC Davis has a Companion Exotic Animal Medicine and Surgery Service. Exotic appointments are scheduled through the Small Animal Hospital.
Exotic appointment phone
Call 530-752-1393 for companion exotic appointments. UC Davis says clients or primary veterinarians can make appointments for this service.
Bring husbandry details
For birds, reptiles, rabbits, rodents, fish, and other exotics, bring diet brands, cage setup, temperature, humidity, UVB, substrate, supplements, water quality, stool details, and photos of the enclosure.
Exotic emergency hours
Exotic animal emergency service is listed Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-5 p.m. and weekends/holidays 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Call before coming.
Wildlife caution
Do not handle sick wild mammals such as skunks, bats, foxes, coyotes, or raccoons because of rabies exposure risk. Contact animal control or a licensed wildlife rehabilitator when appropriate.
Large Animal Hospital, horses, livestock, field service, and trailer arrival
The Large Animal Hospital provides in-clinic and field-based veterinary care for equine and livestock animals.
Referrals, primary veterinarian records, imaging, and appointment delays
Some UC Davis services can be scheduled by owners, while others require referral review or direct veterinarian communication. Do not assume every specialty can schedule immediately.
| Referral situation | Best route | Important detail |
|---|---|---|
| Primary vet recommended UC Davis | Your veterinarian can call VMTH or you can call directly for many appointments. | Bring or send records, test results, imaging, and response-to-treatment notes. |
| Specialty referral with imaging | Follow the specific service’s referral instructions. | Some services request records and diagnostic images before appointment review. |
| Urgent specialist issue | Call the main hospital number or emergency service rather than waiting for routine review. | Neurology, soft tissue surgery, orthopedic trauma, ophthalmology, and other urgent cases may require direct clinician triage. |
| Records not yet sent | Ask your regular veterinarian to email or transfer records before the visit. | UC Davis uses prior blood tests and imaging to understand disease progression and decide whether testing must be repeated. |
| Referring veterinarian access | Referring veterinarians can use the RDVM portal for referred cases. | The portal can show history, physical exam findings, procedures, lab results, imaging reports, pharmacy dispensations, diagnoses, plans, discharge summary, and discharge instructions when finalized. |
Client Portal, messages, estimates, invoices, and discharge instructions
Current or active VMTH clients can use the Online Client Portal to manage parts of their veterinary care.
Portal can help with
- Messaging the clinician about recent appointments.
- Viewing upcoming appointments.
- Canceling upcoming appointments.
- Signing estimates.
- Reviewing visit invoices.
- Reviewing recent visits, discharge instructions, and prescriptions.
- Managing invoice, scheduling, and prescription needs.
Portal is not for emergencies
Do not use portal messaging for breathing trouble, collapse, seizures, major trauma, poisoning, severe colic, foaling difficulty, blocked urination, or fast-worsening symptoms.
Billing and estimates
The portal supports invoice and billing-related access. For billing concerns, use the small-animal or large-animal billing email shown in this guide.
Pharmacy payment
UC Davis pharmacy says medication charges can be paid through the Client Portal and pharmacy staff can help set up portal access.
Open the Client Portal
- Use the client information linked to your VMTH account.
- Check appointments, invoices, estimates, records, prescriptions, and recent visits.
- Call the hospital directly for urgent symptoms or emergency care.
Reach your care team
Open the official hospital page
- Use care-team contact only for current patients.
- Use Client Services for records, existing appointment questions, insurance records, and contact updates.
- Use emergency phone lines for urgent symptoms.

The UC Davis Pharmaceutical Service supports VMTH patients, clinicians, and hospital care teams.

| Pharmacy phone | 530-752-0187 | Use for pharmacy charges, refill questions, and Client Portal pharmacy-payment help. |

| Refills with existing refills | If product is in stock and refills remain, UC Davis says the refill is generally filled within about 10 minutes after calling. | Call with the prescription number from the vial to speed up processing. |
| No refills or doctor unavailable | Medication orders can take 24-72 hours if no refills remain or if the doctor is not available. | Request refills before you run out, especially before weekends or holidays. |
| Outside pharmacy | Human-labeled drugs may be filled at a local pharmacy if your veterinarian provides a written prescription. | Check whether the medication is available locally before transferring or requesting refills. |
| Medication shipping | UC Davis says medications can be mailed for a fee. | Ask about shipping timing, temperature-sensitive medications, and delivery address before relying on mail. |
Medical records, insurance records, imaging, discharge instructions, and referral records
Records are critical at UC Davis because many patients arrive with complex medical histories, previous testing, referrals, or emergency needs.
| Record need | Best route | What to include |
|---|---|---|
| Copies of VMTH records | Call Small Animal at 530-752-1393 or Large Animal at 530-752-0290, or use Client Services / Client Portal when available. | Client name, patient name, species, date range, service, record type, and recipient email/fax. |

| Exotic-pet record copy | Front desk staff can provide records after clinician review. | UC Davis exotics FAQ says records are generally available after review, often within 7-10 business days, and clients should specify if imaging copies are needed. |
| Discharge instructions | Use printout, email, or Client Portal after the visit when available. | Medication plan, feeding, activity restriction, recheck date, warning signs, and who to call if symptoms worsen. |
Billing, estimates, deposits, paperless billing, and payment planning
UC Davis veterinary costs vary by species, illness, urgency, diagnostics, specialty service, surgery, hospitalization, medication, and response to treatment.
Estimate limitations
UC Davis says exact diagnosis and treatment costs cannot always be predicted at admission because animals’ conditions and responses vary. Ask for updated estimates as care changes.
Deposits
If an animal is admitted for diagnosis or treatment with estimates above $3,000, UC Davis says a deposit of 100% of the lower end of the estimate is expected. For estimates of $3,000 or less, the deposit is 50% of the high end of the estimate.
Payment at discharge
Full payment is required at the end of the visit. UC Davis also warns that supplemental charges may be billed later if all charges are not available at discharge.
Paperless billing
UC Davis says VMTH moved to paperless billing starting December 13, 2023, with invoices or statements sent to the email on the client account.
Accepted payment methods
Visible UC Davis appointment information lists cash, checks, Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express, ATM debit cards, and Apple Pay.
Refund timing
UC Davis says refunds for cash, check, or Apple Pay payments are returned by refund check and may take up to 6 weeks to process and mail.

Content gap audit: what generic UC Davis vet listings usually miss
