The Emergency Department provides emergency, urgent and non-urgent evaluation for adults and children and serves as a specialty receiving center for trauma and several other emergency conditions. City staffing information describes dedicated treatment areas for resuscitation, adult emergency care, pediatric care and behavioral-health patients.

When to call 911 instead of driving yourself

ZSFG advises patients to call 911 for a medical emergency. Examples of symptoms that should not be routed through ordinary urgent care include severe injury or bleeding, chest pain, difficulty breathing, sudden dizziness or fainting, severe abdominal pain, sudden vision loss and difficulty speaking.

Age-Friendly Emergency Department

Older adults can receive additional navigation support through ZSFG’s Age-Friendly Emergency Department program in Building 25.

Psychiatric Emergency Services

Psychiatric Emergency Services (PES) is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for people needing psychiatric assessment at ZSFG. The service is connected with the Building 25 emergency campus.

Adult Urgent Care

These hours took effect July 1, 2026. Adult urgent care can evaluate issues such as cough, sore throat, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, joint or muscle pain and mild asthma.

Pediatric Urgent Care

Pediatric Urgent Care is in Building 5, sixth floor, Unit 6M. The service treats children and adolescents and accepts walk-ins.

Why an ER charge cannot be reduced to one number

A visit may include separate charges for:

• Hospital facility services
• Emergency physician or other professional services
• Laboratory testing
• X-ray, CT, ultrasound or other imaging
• Medications
• Procedures
• Trauma services
• Observation or admission
• Specialist consultation

Doctor consultation fees

ZSFG does not publish one fixed consultation fee for all doctors. A routine specialty visit, urgent-care visit, procedure visit, emergency evaluation and hospital admission are billed differently. Insurance coverage also changes what the patient ultimately owes.

How to estimate a planned service

Hundreds of UCSF faculty physicians, fellows, residents, advanced-practice clinicians and other providers work across ZSFG. The hospital does not publish one permanent hospital-wide table showing every physician and their Monday-Sunday working hours.

Emergency physicians, hospitalists, surgeons and inpatient specialists rotate by shift. Outpatient clinic faculty also rotate by clinic session. For that reason, a doctor name should not be paired with a guessed weekly schedule.

The Obstetrics, Midwifery and Gynecology Clinic is in Building 5, fifth floor, Suite 5A, phone 628-206-3409. Published clinic sessions begin at 8:00 a.m. Monday-Friday, but the attending physician assigned to an individual session varies.

Rehabilitation appointment example

ZSFG Rehabilitation Services instructs patients without a hospital card to go to Outpatient Registration on the first floor of Building 5 about 30 minutes before the appointment. This is a good example of why checking clinic-specific arrival instructions matters.

Clinic closing times and individual physician sessions can change. Call the clinic before traveling when the exact end time is important.

Visitor check-in and security

• Visitors check in at the lobby.
• Bring photo identification.
• Wear the issued visitor badge visibly.
• Visitors may pass through a weapons detector.
• Bags may be checked.
• ZSFG is a weapon-free, drug-free and smoke-free hospital campus.
• Visitors younger than 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
• Patients and visitors who feel ill should delay non-essential visits when possible.

Current public parking rates

SFMTA currently notes that garage access on the 23rd Street side may be limited during certain nighttime hours. Follow posted signs when entering or leaving.

On-campus parking

ZSFG also has permit-controlled on-campus parking, but public visitors should not assume they can use employee or permit lots. The 24th Street public garage is the more practical option for most visitors.

Diagnostic-image requests go through the ZSFG Imaging Library rather than the ordinary paper-record office.

Fast option for existing patients

MyChart can provide access to many results, medications, appointments and other portions of the electronic health record without waiting for a full formal records request.

MyChart can also support pre-visit tasks and certain video visits for San Francisco Health Network patients.

Billing phone hours

Current financial policies list ZSFG billing/customer-service availability Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m.

Payment plans

Patients can request or manage payment plans through MyChart, by contacting Patient Financial Services or by calling the billing department.

Financial assistance

ZSFG has a combined application process for its Charity Care and Discount Payment programs. The hospital’s current patient page says:

• Charity Care eligibility is available under specified rules for qualifying households at or below 138% of the Federal Poverty Level.
• Patients who do not qualify for Charity Care may be evaluated for the Discount Payment Program.
• Income documentation and other program requirements apply.
• Patients should apply rather than assume they are ineligible.

Specialty Pharmacy staff are available by phone Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. for direct refill/service questions.

The current ZSFG language-access policy states that:

• In-person staff interpreters are generally available daily 8:00 a.m.-8:30 p.m..
• Video interpreting is available in equipped areas.
• Telephone interpretation is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
• Telephonic interpretation covers approximately 200 languages.
• Support is also available for patients with hearing or vision-related communication needs.

The Patient Experience office can help patients or family members navigate departments, understand patient rights, communicate a concern to management or submit a formal Patient Concern Statement.
