Emergency Medicine.

CHOP’s Philadelphia Emergency Department is on the first floor of the Main Building and is staffed by clinicians trained specifically in pediatric emergency medicine. On-site radiology is available, and the department can provide sedation for appropriate procedures.

Trauma: CHOP’s Main Hospital Emergency Department was the first Level I Trauma Center for children in the Delaware Valley.

If someone is dropping you off

A patient may enter through the Main Hospital front entrance at 3401 Civic Center Boulevard or may be dropped at the Emergency Department walk-in entrance in the ambulance-bay area near Civic Center Boulevard and East Service Drive.

Do not leave a vehicle in the ambulance bay. After patient drop-off, the driver must move the vehicle to an approved parking garage.

Emergency parking

Families arriving by car for the Emergency Department should use Main Hospital Parking Garage A. Garage A is intended for Emergency Department and same-day surgery families.

Current published validated ER parking rate: CHOP’s Emergency Department visitor guide states that validated CHOP garage parking is a flat $5 during the Emergency Department visit.

What happens in the ER?

Triage. A pediatric emergency nurse assesses the child and determines clinical urgency.
Registration. Families provide demographic and insurance information when the child’s condition allows.
Clinical evaluation. A pediatric emergency team evaluates the child. More seriously ill patients are seen first, rather than strictly in arrival order.
Tests or consultation if needed. Laboratory testing, imaging, medication, procedures or specialist consultation may be ordered.
Discharge, observation or admission. Children needing longer monitoring may use the Extended Care Area or be admitted to an inpatient unit.

Emergency fee

CHOP does not publish one fixed “ER visit price” because emergency costs depend on the services actually required. An emergency bill may include:

  • Emergency physician evaluation
  • Hospital/facility services
  • Laboratory work
  • X-rays or other imaging
  • Medication
  • Procedures
  • Sedation
  • Specialty consultation
  • Observation or admission
  • Insurance deductible, copay or coinsurance
Do not delay emergency care in order to obtain a price estimate.

How to make an appointment at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia

Identify the specialty. CHOP has many department-specific appointment lines.
Call the specialty or 1-800-879-2467. The main line can help route families to the appropriate pediatric service.
Have the suspected diagnosis or reason for referral ready. Complex specialty programs may need medical records before scheduling.
Have insurance information available. CHOP may ask for insurer, plan and authorization/referral details.
Confirm the location. The specialist may practice at Philadelphia, King of Prussia or one of CHOP’s regional specialty centers.
Ask for the next available provider if timing is more important than a specific doctor. Some departments can offer earlier appointments when families are flexible about provider and location.

International and some first-time complex-care patients may be asked to arrive earlier. Confirm the arrival time on the appointment instructions rather than assuming every clinic uses the same check-in window.

CHOP doctors and pediatric specialist teams

CHOP has a very large medical staff, so the tables below focus on current physicians in several highly searched pediatric specialties. They are not meant to replace CHOP’s live provider directory.

Doctor timing: CHOP does not publish one permanent Monday-through-Friday rota for every physician. Doctors may rotate among Philadelphia, King of Prussia, surgery, inpatient service and regional clinics. Call the specialty or use CHOP’s live scheduling tools for the physician’s actual available date and location.

CHOP doctor fees, hospital charges and price estimates

CHOP does not publish one hospital-wide consultation price that applies to every physician, because a patient’s actual cost depends on the specialty, service, location, insurance contract, deductible, copay, coinsurance and any additional testing or procedures.

How to get an estimate before scheduled care

Identify the service or procedure. Ask the clinic for the procedure/service name and billing code when available.
Have insurance information ready.
Call CHOP’s pre-visit financial counseling / cost-estimate team. Phone: 267-426-1467.
Ask whether the estimate includes both hospital and physician charges. Some services may involve more than one type of bill.
CHOP publishes hospital price-transparency information and also allows eligible families to request a Good Faith Estimate. An estimate is not a guarantee of the final amount because the actual services required can change.

Emergency costs

There is no single fixed CHOP ER fee. Emergency care may involve facility services, professional evaluation, imaging, laboratory testing, medication, procedures or hospital admission.

Insurance accepted by Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia

CHOP participates with many commercial, Medicaid and other health plans, but participation may vary by product, provider, state and service. Current examples on CHOP’s participating-plan information include:

Aetna
AmeriHealth
AmeriHealth Caritas
Blue Cross Blue Shield
Cigna
Coventry
First Health
Geisinger Health Plans
TRICARE East
UnitedHealthcare
UPMC plans
Medical Assistance plans
Insurance name alone is not enough. A specific product may be out of network even when another plan from the same insurer participates. Confirm the exact CHOP facility and physician with your insurance company before non-emergency care.

Behavioral-health insurance can be different

CHOP publishes a separate behavioral-health participating-plan list because mental-health network participation can differ from medical benefits.

CHOP financial assistance

Current 2026 policy: CHOP states that qualifying patients can receive a 100% waiver of eligible patient financial responsibility for medically necessary and emergency care.

Core current eligibility requirements

CHOP’s current financial-assistance summary states that a family generally must:

  • Have household income at or below 400% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines.
  • Be uninsured or insured by a health plan that participates with CHOP.
  • Reside within CHOP’s Primary Service Area.
  • Cooperate with applications for Medicaid, CHIP or other state programs when potentially eligible.
  • Complete the CHOP Financial Assistance Application and provide required documents.

CHOP states there is no fee for its online bill-pay service.

MyCHOP users can also view statements and other billing information inside the portal. Guest payment is available for eligible bills without creating a MyCHOP account.
