Union General Hospital Emergency Room

The Blairsville ER has 18 patient-care beds, nurse-first triage and continuous physician coverage.

Emergency hours 24/7

Every day of the year.

ER capacity 18 patient-care beds

Includes areas for cardiac, major trauma and orthopedic emergencies.

Physician coverage 24 hours

Advanced practice providers also assist during busy periods.

How emergency triage works

A nurse evaluates you first. Union General uses nurse-first triage so the initial clinical assessment can begin before traditional registration.
Registration can occur at the bedside. Mobile registration staff collect necessary information after clinical triage begins.
The sickest patients are treated first. The ER is not strictly first-come, first-served.
Diagnostic testing is available. The ER can use hospital laboratory and radiology resources to evaluate the problem.
You may be discharged or admitted. Patients requiring inpatient treatment can be admitted through the hospital.

Heart-attack and chest-pain care

Union General Hospital has received American College of Cardiology recognition for chest-pain and heart-failure care. Patients with possible heart-attack symptoms are evaluated through emergency and cardiac-care pathways.

Call 911 for severe chest pain, major breathing difficulty, stroke symptoms, severe trauma or another potentially life-threatening condition rather than attempting to schedule an outpatient appointment.

How to schedule hospital tests and appointments

Hospital diagnostic scheduling usually starts with an order from your doctor.

Union General Call Center (706) 439-6450

Scheduling & Precertification: Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m.

Your provider orders the test or procedure. Union General states an exam cannot be scheduled until a compliant provider order exists.
The provider sends the order. Scheduled-procedure orders can be faxed to the hospital Call Center at 706-439-6163.
The scheduling team contacts the patient. Staff coordinate an available date and time.
If nobody calls within two business days, call the hospital. Patients are instructed to contact the Call Center at 706-439-6450.
Confirm precertification. Some insurers require approval before imaging, surgery or other scheduled services.
Expect copay/deductible collection. Registration states that applicable copays and deductibles are collected at the time of service.

Walk-up testing orders

Orders for hospital testing that does not require an appointment can be sent to Union General Registration at fax 706-439-6405.

Union General doctors and specialty clinics

Current official clinic pages identify the following Blairsville physicians and advanced-practice providers.

Doctor timing: Union General publishes provider names and clinic contacts but does not publish a reliable Monday-through-Friday individual schedule for every physician. A doctor may be in surgery, covering the hospital or working at another location. Call the clinic for the exact day and appointment time.

19 Doctors Way, Blairsville.

After-hours L&D nurses (706) 439-6439

For pregnancy-related after-hours concerns; call 911 for life-threatening emergencies.

Labor unit setup

The women’s unit has four labor/delivery/recovery rooms, one triage area for outpatient testing or observation, a dedicated operating room for cesarean delivery and a post-anesthesia recovery area.

Labor visitors

Union General currently allows three visitors at a time with a patient in labor. Visitors may rotate. Children under age 12 are generally not allowed unless they are siblings of the newborn. The unit remains locked and visitors must use the entrance buzzer.

Pregnancy after-hours routing

20 weeks or less
Serious pregnancy-related problems may be evaluated through the Emergency Department.
After 20 weeks
Pregnancy-related problems are generally evaluated through the obstetrics unit, where a nurse assesses the patient and notifies the physician.
Life-threatening problem
Call 911 or seek immediate emergency care.

Routine pregnancy billing

Union General Women’s Health explains that uncomplicated prenatal care may be billed as a global obstetric package covering routine prenatal visits, delivery and the six-week postpartum visit. The initial detailed evaluation, laboratory tests, fetal testing, ultrasounds, hospital charges and medically necessary visits outside the routine schedule can be billed separately.

The office does not publish one universal dollar amount for the maternity global package. Call 706-835-2222 and verify your insurance benefits for the current patient-specific estimate.

MRI, CT, mammography and radiology

Union General offers a broad range of imaging on the Blairsville hospital campus.

Available imaging

  • Mammography
  • Bone-density testing
  • CT scans
  • MRI
  • Ultrasound
  • Echocardiograms
  • Nuclear medicine
  • PET/CT

Union General states its mammography program is certified by the American College of Radiology and FDA, and its imaging technologists hold relevant ARRT or ARDMS credentials.

Scheduling imaging

Scheduled imaging generally requires a provider order. Once the order is received, call 706-439-6450 if the scheduling team has not contacted you within two business days.

MRI, CT, PET and other tests can require preparation, contrast, fasting or insurance precertification. Follow the instructions for your exact study rather than general internet advice.

Laboratory services and test results

The hospital provides routine clinical laboratory testing and transfusion support.

Lab services include

  • Specimen collection
  • Routine clinical testing
  • Analytical testing
  • Serologic testing
  • Transfusion-related laboratory services
  • Send-out specialty testing when a test is not performed locally
Getting results: Union General states the hospital laboratory does not release laboratory-result interpretations directly to patients. Results are returned to the ordering doctor, so contact the physician who ordered the test.

Doctor fees, ER charges and hospital price estimates

The hospital publishes 2026 price-transparency data, but chargemaster prices are not the same as the amount a patient ultimately owes.

Current hospital CDM Updated March 24, 2026

Union General publishes a current hospital chargemaster and patient-facing estimator.

Pricing questions (706) 745-2111

Ask for Financial Counseling / Central Business Office.

What the hospital price file does not include

Union General explicitly states that its hospital pricing list does not include physician professional charges, including charges from:

  • Office-visit physicians
  • Surgeons
  • Anesthesiologists
  • Emergency-room physicians
  • Radiologists
  • Pathologists
  • Consulting physicians

Why there is no one ER fee

An emergency visit can include a facility charge plus separate professional services, laboratory testing, imaging, medicines, procedures, supplies and an inpatient stay if admission is required. Therefore, a single “ER price” would be misleading.

Why there is no one doctor fee

Physician charges can vary by specialty, new versus established patient status, complexity, procedure performed and insurance network status. The hospital’s posted CDM does not establish a universal doctor consultation price.

Best way to estimate planned care

  1. Use Union General’s official patient-facing estimator for an eligible scheduled service.
  2. Ask whether the estimate includes only hospital charges or also professional fees.
  3. Call your insurer to confirm deductible, copay and coinsurance.
  4. Verify whether the surgeon, anesthesiologist and radiologist are in-network.
  5. Ask Financial Counseling about self-pay terms if you do not have insurance.

Financial assistance: who may qualify?

Union General has a formal charity-care and discounted-care policy for eligible medically necessary services.

Above 400% Patients with catastrophic or unusual financial hardship may still be evaluated individually.

>350%-375%80%
>375%-400%90%

“AGB” means amounts generally billed. The policy states qualifying patients are not billed more than the applicable amount generally billed for eligible emergency or medically necessary care.

Services covered by the policy

The policy identifies emergency medical services and qualifying non-elective, medically necessary care as eligible categories. Purely cosmetic and elective services are excluded.

Documents the hospital may request

  • Recent wage or employer statements
  • Tax return
  • Unemployment information
  • Social Security or disability documentation
  • Recent bank statements
  • Proof of residency
  • Information about household expenses
  • Information about assets when applicable

Application timing

The posted policy gives patients up to 240 days after the first post-discharge bill to submit a financial-assistance application. Collection activity can begin earlier if no application or payment arrangement is made, so patients should contact Financial Counseling as early as possible.

Financial assistance generally covers eligible hospital facility charges. Private or contracted physician practices can bill separately and may have their own assistance policies.

Insurance accepted by Union General Hospital

The health system contracts with most common carriers but specifically warns that not every plan or product is in-network.

Insurance / Central Billing Office (706) 745-2111

Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

Union General publishes current plan-summary documents, but insurance contracts can change. The hospital therefore recommends verifying the exact plan before scheduled care.

Before a scheduled procedure, ask your insurer

  1. Is Union General Hospital, Blairsville in-network for my exact plan?
  2. Is the doctor or surgeon in-network?
  3. Is prior authorization required?
  4. Is a referral required?
  5. What deductible remains?
  6. What copay or coinsurance applies?
  7. Will anesthesiology, radiology, pathology or another physician group bill separately?
Union General’s Insurance Department bills participating insurance carriers on the patient’s behalf for covered services. Bring current insurance information when you register.

How to request records

Request electronically or in person. Union General offers online patient and provider records-request tools.
Sign the required authorization. The hospital needs appropriate permission before releasing protected health information.
Allow approximately 2-4 business days for electronic delivery. More complex requests can take longer.
Bring photo identification for pickup. A driver’s license or other acceptable photo ID is required.
In-person requests may sometimes be processed while you wait. You may also return later for pickup.

The portal provides access to information such as:

Tobacco policy

Union General Hospital is a tobacco-free facility and campus. Smoking and smokeless tobacco are prohibited on hospital grounds.

Parking, drop-off and campus navigation

The hospital maintains on-site patient and visitor parking around the Blairsville campus.

The current official patient pages provide hospital campus maps and point-to-point maps, but they do not publish a universal parking fee or valet price. Because no current official parking charge is stated, this guide does not invent one.

Before arriving

  • Use 35 Hospital Road for the main hospital.
  • Follow Emergency Department signs for urgent emergency care.
  • Check your appointment paperwork because many Union General specialty clinics are in nearby separate buildings.
  • Ask the main desk or Public Safety if you need accessible parking or help locating an entrance.
The Health System maintains individual maps for Registration, Surgery Waiting, Wound Care, Respiratory Therapy, Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation and the cafeteria.

Cafeteria, guest meals and vending

Visitors can use the hospital cafeteria during three published meal periods.

MealCurrent visitor service time

Vending-machine locations

Hospital pharmacy

The published pharmacy information describes an inpatient hospital pharmacy, not a public retail drugstore.

Hospital pharmacy coverage 24 hours

A pharmacist is on-site or on call around the clock.

The Pharmacy Department supports inpatient medication services, medication dosing consultations and emergency medication needs, including specialized medicines for acute cardiac problems and snakebite treatment.

Do not assume the inpatient pharmacy can fill a routine outpatient prescription for the public. Call 706-745-2111 before arriving specifically for pharmacy pickup.

Public Safety, valuables and chaplain support

Hospital security operates continuously.

Public Safety 24 hours

Main hospital: 706-745-2111.

Public Safety Concern (706) 994-4759

For non-emergency hospital safety concerns.

Union General Public Safety is an in-house licensed security operation. For immediate threats or community emergencies, call 911.

Patient valuables

The hospital maintains secure storage for valuables. Patients are encouraged to use it for money, jewelry or other valuable property rather than leaving those items unsecured in a room.

Chaplaincy

A chaplain is on duty daily. Weekday chaplains make requested patient visits; weekend chaplains are available for emergencies. Ask nursing staff if you would like spiritual support.
