Where is the children’s ER?

The pediatric emergency department is on Marquam Hill at the same emergency location used by OHSU’s adult emergency department. The Doernbecher hospital building itself is at 700 S.W. Campus Drive, but families going specifically to the ER should navigate to 3181 S.W. Sam Jackson Park Road.

When OHSU says to seek emergency care

OHSU lists examples such as severe breathing difficulty, serious injuries, severe burns, seizures, significant dehydration and fever in an infant younger than two months. This is not a complete symptom list; when a condition appears life-threatening, call 911.

How to get an OHSU cost estimate

Before a scheduled appointment

• Ask your insurer whether OHSU Health is in network.
• Ask whether the specific pediatric doctor is in network.
• Ask what deductible, co-pay and coinsurance will apply.
• Confirm whether a referral or prior authorization is required.
• Call OHSU Registration at 503-494-8505 if insurance information is new or has changed.

Bill payment and billing questions

OHSU explains that a bill may combine hospital and provider services, while certain services such as anesthesia may generate separate billing.

Eligibility also considers insurance, household size and the type of care. OHSU’s financial-assistance program generally applies to emergency and medically necessary care, with exclusions for some services.

OHSU says applications can generally be made up to 240 days after the first billing statement for covered services or within 12 months of paying for those services.

Late-night hospital entry

Access to Doernbecher is restricted from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.. During those hours, families can use the phone at the Doernbecher lobby entrance or access the hospital through the ninth-floor skybridge from OHSU Hospital.

ICU visitor considerations

Intensive-care areas can have stricter infection-control and visitor requirements. Doernbecher’s PICU guidance includes health screening and hand-hygiene requirements; individual restrictions can change based on the child’s clinical situation.

Before arrival

OHSU may contact families before a scheduled procedure or admission to confirm demographic and insurance information. Surgical patients may also have pre-admission testing.

OHSU allows patients and authorized representatives to request records through the MyChart Sharing Hub. MyChart can also be used for appointments, test results, messages and billing.

Rood Family Pavilion

Families traveling from outside the Portland metro area may be eligible to stay at OHSU’s Rood Family Pavilion at no charge, subject to available space. A floor is dedicated to families with children receiving care at Doernbecher, with private suites and shared areas for cooking, playing and relaxing.

Ask the child’s care team or social worker about eligibility and availability rather than arriving at the pavilion without arrangements.

Gift shop and lost property

OHSU’s Treasures Gift Shop is on the ninth floor and is currently listed as open 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. weekdays, excluding holidays. For lost items, first ask the child’s care team; OHSU directs older lost-property inquiries to Public Safety at 503-494-7744.

Use 700 S.W. Campus Drive, Portland, OR 97239 for the main Doernbecher hospital. For a planned clinic visit, Garage G at 710 S.W. Lower Canyon Drive is generally the most convenient patient garage.

Driving to the pediatric ER

Use 3181 S.W. Sam Jackson Park Road, Portland, OR 97239 for the OHSU/Doernbecher emergency department rather than relying on the main children’s hospital street address.
