Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston: what patients should know

The main campus is much larger than a single hospital building.

Mass General was founded in 1811 and today operates as a major academic hospital within Mass General Brigham. It is closely affiliated with Harvard Medical School and provides highly specialized medical, surgical, emergency, cancer, heart, transplant, neurological, orthopedic, pediatric and primary-care services.

The main Boston campus includes nearly 30 buildings. Depending on your appointment, you may be directed to the Wang Ambulatory Care Center, Yawkey Center, Ellison Building, White Building, Lunder Building, Cox Building, Austen Building or another campus location rather than simply “55 Fruit Street.”

Construction affects the main entrance. Access around the 55 Fruit Street main entrance remains affected by construction associated with the Ragon Building project. Mass General currently recommends using the Yawkey Building or Wang Building for many routine patient drop-offs. Emergency Department drop-off remains an exception.

Emergency care

24/7 emergency evaluation, critical care and access to major specialty services.

Academic specialty care

Mass General’s physician directory contains nearly 3,000 doctors across the main campus and satellite locations.

Research & teaching

The hospital combines patient care with major biomedical research and medical education programs.

Where is the Emergency Department?

The Emergency Department is on Mass General’s main Boston campus at 55 Fruit Street. Drivers approaching from Cambridge Street can turn onto North Grove Street and follow signs for the hospital and Emergency Department.

The 55 Fruit Street main-entrance construction restrictions do not eliminate emergency drop-off access. Follow Emergency Department signs rather than routine outpatient drop-off directions.

Emergency visitor rules

  • Emergency Department visitation is permitted 24 hours a day.
  • Adult ED patients are generally permitted one visitor or support person.
  • Pediatric ED patients are generally permitted two visitors or support persons.
  • Access can be restricted during high-volume periods or when required for patient care.

Emergency room fee

Mass General does not publish one flat ER fee that represents every emergency visit. The final bill depends on the level of evaluation, imaging, laboratory testing, procedures, medications, supplies and other services used. Your insurance deductible, copayment and coinsurance can also change what you owe.

Questions about an Emergency Department bill can be directed to Mass General Brigham Patient Billing Solutions at 617-726-3884.

How to make an appointment at Massachusetts General Hospital

Mass General does not use one universal appointment number for every specialty.

Identify the specialty or service you need. A primary-care appointment, cardiology consultation, cancer visit, imaging test and neurology visit use different scheduling routes.
If you need a new primary-care doctor, call 800-711-4644. The Physician Referral Service can help connect new patients with available primary-care practices.
For specialty care, use the specialty’s direct number. Major examples are listed below.
Check whether a referral is required. Your health plan or the specialty itself may require a referral before scheduling.
Confirm the exact building. Mass General’s main campus is large; an appointment may be in Wang, Yawkey, Charles River Plaza or another building.
Existing patients can use Patient Gateway. Depending on the practice, patients can manage appointments and communicate with the care team online.

Mass General doctors, physician names and availability

Mass General’s current directory contains nearly 3,000 physicians across the hospital, health centers and satellite locations.

Doctor timing accuracy: Mass General does not publish one permanent Monday-through-Sunday schedule for all physicians. Doctors rotate through clinic sessions, inpatient rounds, surgery, procedures, teaching and research. Where an exact doctor’s clinic day is not publicly posted, this guide does not invent one.

Examples of current Mass General specialists

Doctor Specialty / role Current official contact information Availability note
Thor Sundt, MD Cardiac Surgery; Chief, Division of Cardiac Surgery; Director, Corrigan Minehan Heart Center 617-643-9745 Current official profile lists him as accepting new patients. Exact clinic dates require scheduling confirmation.
Nathaniel Langer, MD Cardiac Surgery; Structural Heart Disease; Lung Transplantation 617-726-2593 Current official profile lists new-patient access; specific appointment times vary.
Mitchel Harris, MD Orthopaedic Trauma; Chair of Orthopaedic Surgery 617-726-9111 Office availability must be confirmed directly.
Bruce Kastin, MD Comprehensive Neurology; Chief, Division of Comprehensive Neurology 855-644-6387
617-726-8639
Neurology scheduling depends on clinical need and referral requirements.
Craig Blackstone, MD, PhD Movement Disorders; Chief, Movement Disorders Division 855-644-6387 Exact appointment days are not published as a permanent weekly schedule.
Andrew Brunner, MD Hematology/Oncology; Myelodysplastic Syndromes and advanced hematologic malignancies 617-726-5130 Cancer Institute appointment routing is handled through the oncology access team.
Kamal Medlej, MD Emergency Medicine; Critical Care 617-724-4100 Emergency physicians work rotating clinical schedules rather than public outpatient clinic hours.

These names are representative current examples, not a complete physician roster. Mass General’s searchable directory is the correct tool when a patient needs a specific disease specialist, language preference, pediatric provider or location.

When calling, ask: “Is this doctor accepting new patients, which office do they see patients at, is a referral required, and what is the next available appointment?”

Where to drop off or pick up a patient at Mass General

Construction makes choosing the correct entrance especially important.

Routine patient drop-off

During the main-entrance construction period, Mass General currently recommends Yawkey Building or Wang Building drop-off for many patients and visitors. Vehicles cannot remain parked in front of the main entrance.

Short-term live parking

Fruit Street Garage level GA, just before the exit gates, is designated for short-term live parking and patient drop-off. Parking in this area is free for the first 30 minutes.

Patient pickup after an appointment or discharge

Patients can currently be picked up at:

  • Wang Circle, off Parkman Street
  • In front of the Yawkey Building, generally from 6 a.m.-6 p.m.

Drivers should arrive only when the patient is ready. Vehicles are not permitted to wait indefinitely at pickup areas and may be directed to a parking garage.

Before discharge, confirm the exact pickup location with the nurse or patient transport team. The safest instruction to a driver is a named entrance — not simply “Mass General.”

What insurance does Massachusetts General Hospital accept?

Insurance participation is not as simple as checking whether a carrier’s name appears on a list. One insurance company may sell several different HMO, PPO, Medicare Advantage, Medicaid or employer plans with different network rules.

Before scheduling a non-emergency visit

  1. Call the number on your insurance card.
  2. Give the representative the exact Mass General location.
