The Corrigan Minehan Heart Center brings together cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, cardiac anesthesiologists, cardiac imaging specialists, nurses and other cardiovascular professionals. Its programs cover both common heart disease and complex conditions that may require multidisciplinary evaluation.

The center traces Mass General’s cardiology history back to 1916 and today provides care through both the Boston main campus and community locations including Waltham.

Who should consider the Heart Center?

The current directory can be filtered by program, location, language and provider gender. Programs represented include cardiac surgery, cardiac anesthesia, electrophysiology, interventional cardiology, general cardiology, imaging, transplant, congenital heart disease, women’s heart health, valve disease and vascular medicine.

Current leadership and program specialists

The official Heart Center directory lists specialists but does not publish a dependable unified daily schedule for every physician. Many cardiologists split time between clinical care, inpatient service, procedures, imaging, research and community locations.

How to get a personal estimate

Estimates are not guarantees. Additional care, complications, insurance changes, deductible balances and unplanned services can change the final patient responsibility.

The Heart Center appointment office is not an emergency clinic. Mass General’s Emergency Department at the main Boston campus is open 24 hours per day, 365 days per year.

During current main-campus construction, Mass General says access to the 55 Fruit Street main entrance is limited, but Emergency Department drop-off remains an exception. Follow current Emergency Department signs when arriving.

Example: transthoracic echocardiogram preparation

Mass General instructs patients scheduled for a transthoracic echocardiogram to arrive at least 15 minutes before the exam for registration. Patients should make sure insurance information is current and bring a photo ID and Mass General medical record number when applicable.

The echo laboratory currently lists 617-726-1840 or 617-726-8871 for cancellations; patients who cannot attend are asked to notify the lab 24–48 hours before the test.

The Division of Cardiac Surgery provides coronary bypass, valve surgery, aortic surgery, transplant-related surgery and other complex procedures. The team works with cardiologists, anesthesiologists and imaging specialists to determine the treatment approach.

The recovery guide advises cardiac-surgery patients to arrange follow-up with their surgeon approximately 4–6 weeks after discharge and also contact their primary-care physician and cardiologist for follow-up.

The guide identifies the postoperative cardiac-surgery visit location as Cox Building, 6th Floor, Suite 630 for patients assigned there. Always confirm your own appointment location because individual postoperative plans can differ.

Call the cardiac surgery office when instructed for concerns such as

• Increasing redness, swelling, drainage or tenderness around an incision
• An incision reopening
• Fever above the threshold listed in your discharge instructions
• New abnormal or unusually fast heartbeat
• Increasing leg swelling
• Rapid weight gain described in your personal discharge plan

Special visitor situations

For an ICU patient, only immediate family may be able to receive clinical information by telephone. Before visiting a cardiac ICU or recently postoperative patient, confirm with the patient’s nurse.

Main-campus patients commonly use the Fruit Street Garage, Parkman Street Garage or Yawkey Center Garage. The Yawkey garage is especially convenient when an appointment is in the Yawkey Center.

Short patient drop-off parking

The Fruit Street Garage, level GA, has a short-term/live-parking area. Mass General currently provides the first 30 minutes at no cost in that area and recommends it for patient drop-off.

• Parkman Street Garage: 21 accessible spaces
• Yawkey garage elevators lead directly to the Yawkey lobby.

Vehicle-height limits vary by garage. If you drive a wheelchair-accessible van or other tall vehicle, confirm garage clearance before arrival.

Current construction-related drop-off guidance

During ongoing main-entrance construction, Mass General advises patients and visitors to use the Yawkey Building or Wang Building for routine patient drop-off. The main entrance cannot be used as a waiting/parking area.

Patient pickup

Patients can currently be picked up at Wang Circle off Parkman Street or in front of the Yawkey Building from 6:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m.. Cars cannot wait at the curb for an extended period.

Medical records can include clinic notes, discharge summaries, laboratory results, operative reports, pathology reports and radiology reports. Specifically protected information can require additional authorization.

Massachusetts General Hospital services are included in the Mass General Brigham billing system. Patients can view balances, pay bills and set up qualifying payment plans through Patient Gateway.

Mass General Brigham offers financial-assistance programs, discounts and payment plans for eligible patients.

Massachusetts residents may also be screened for programs such as MassHealth, the Massachusetts Health Connector or Health Safety Net.

Mass General Brigham says its hospitals accept most major types of health insurance. Massachusetts General Hospital’s published plan materials include various products from insurers such as Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield and Cigna, but exclusions exist within certain products and network tiers.

Before scheduling an expensive heart procedure

1. Confirm Massachusetts General Hospital is in network.
2. Confirm the specific cardiologist or surgeon is in network.
3. Ask whether the procedure requires prior authorization.
4. Ask whether a primary-care or cardiology referral is required.
5. Confirm deductible, copay and coinsurance.
6. Ask about separate anesthesia, imaging or pathology providers.

Mass General supports in-person, telephone and video interpretation. The hospital also maintains overnight on-call pathways for languages including Spanish, Portuguese and American Sign Language.

An outpatient pharmacy is located on the first floor of the Wang Ambulatory Care Center.

Cardiac-surgery and cardiology patients should confirm discharge prescriptions and medication instructions before leaving the hospital.

Mass General states that patients generally experience shorter appointment wait times in Waltham than at the Boston location. The Waltham site treats a broad range of cardiovascular conditions.
