Adult, pediatric and behavioral emergency care

The current Emergency Department is a 36-bed emergency facility. Johns Hopkins’ emergency-medicine training information describes 36 adult treatment rooms, 12 pediatric rooms, four critical-care rooms and secure psychiatric emergency capacity.

Pediatric patients are cared for through a dedicated pediatric emergency program. The Children’s Care Center provides emergency, inpatient and observation care around the clock.

Patients requiring emergency behavioral-health treatment can be evaluated in a separate secure psychiatric emergency area.

Geriatric emergency care

The Emergency Department holds Level 3 Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation from the American College of Emergency Physicians, reflecting dedicated processes for older adult emergency patients.

What is the Howard County ER fee?

There is no single published flat ER fee that accurately predicts every emergency visit. Hospital emergency charges depend on the level of care and services provided, while emergency-physician and other professional fees may be billed separately.

Maryland is also different from many states because average hospital facility rates are regulated by the Maryland Health Services Cost Review Commission. The hospital’s current standard-charge file was updated April 1, 2026.

Maryland regulates hospital facility rates

Average Maryland hospital rates for services such as radiology, laboratory care and inpatient services are regulated by the Maryland Health Services Cost Review Commission (HSCRC). Johns Hopkins states that the HSCRC establishes average hospital rates on January 1 and July 1.

Why an online hospital price is not your final bill

A hospital facility estimate may not include every professional service. Separate professional charges can be associated with:

• physician consultation or examination;
• anesthesia;
• radiology interpretation;
• pathology;
• hospitalist care;
• cardiology;
• emergency physicians;
• other specialists involved in the case.

How to get an estimate

Johns Hopkins states that estimates are generally valid for 30 days, although the final bill can change based on the actual services performed and the patient’s clinical needs.

Johns Hopkins participates with many insurance products, but network participation can vary by product, employer plan, physician group and specialty.

Before a planned procedure

1. Give your insurer the full hospital/facility name.
2. Give the insurer the physician’s name.
3. Verify network status for both.
4. Ask if prior authorization is required.
5. Ask whether your plan requires a particular lab or radiology provider.
6. Ask about your deductible, copay and coinsurance.
7. Request a Johns Hopkins cost estimate.

Bills can be paid online through Johns Hopkins MyChart or by using the payment route shown on the patient’s statement.

Why separate bills are possible

Johns Hopkins warns that private-practice or professional physicians who provide care at a hospital can bill separately from the hospital. Always check the biller name at the top of a statement before calling the billing office.

Johns Hopkins says financial assistance may be available to patients who are uninsured, underinsured, ineligible for government programs or unable to afford medically necessary care.

Eligibility may depend on whether a patient:

• has exhausted available insurance options;
• has been denied Medical Assistance or is not eligible;
• meets financial-assistance criteria involving income, assets and outstanding debt.

Documents the application may require

• prior-year tax returns;
• recent pay stubs or employment-status information;
• Social Security award information when applicable;
• Medical Assistance determination;
• proof of living expenses;
• unpaid medical expenses;
• health-insurance cards;
• proof of residence;
• additional income documentation where applicable.

Johns Hopkins says applications should be submitted according to the application instructions and are not accepted in person. If a balance remains after assistance is applied, a payment plan may still be available.

Before going to a patient room

Visitors must stop at the Information Desk in the hospital lobby. A representative provides a visitor pass and directions to the patient’s area. Wheelchair or other special assistance can also be requested there.

Adult inpatient rooms

• Semi-private room: generally up to two visitors/care partners per patient at a time, space permitting.
• Private room: generally up to four at a time, space permitting.
• One adult care partner may generally remain overnight.
• Patients with disability-related needs may be permitted additional support.

Adult Emergency Department

Up to two care partners or visitors may generally be present at one time when space and clinical conditions permit. Behavioral or psychiatric emergency cases may have additional safety restrictions.

Pediatric patients

• Pediatric inpatient areas may allow up to four care partners/visitors, space permitting.
• Up to two adult parents/care partners may stay overnight with a pediatric patient.
• Pediatric ED generally permits up to two parents/care partners at one time.

Photo and video policy

Photographs and video recording are not permitted without the required patient and hospital consent.

Tobacco-free campus

Johns Hopkins hospital campuses are tobacco-free. Smoking is not permitted in the hospital or on hospital grounds.

Before delivery

Expectant parents should complete the hospital’s requested pre-registration process and keep Labor & Delivery’s direct number available near the expected delivery date.

The Children’s Care Center provides pediatric emergency, observation and inpatient care 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Johns Hopkins reports that the Children’s Care Center treats more than 16,000 children per year.

Health Information Management is currently open to the public Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m., excluding holidays.

Radiology images

The Radiology Film Library can be reached at 410-740-7924. Patients arranging pickup should have identifying information available and bring appropriate identification when collecting records.

MyChart may be faster for many routine records

Test results, clinical information and radiology reports/images may already be available electronically through MyChart, depending on the service.

MyChart is the Johns Hopkins online patient portal. Depending on the patient’s care relationship and clinic, it can be used for:

• viewing test results;
• reviewing clinical information;
• viewing radiology reports and images when available;
• managing selected appointments;
• communicating with participating care teams;
• reviewing bills and paperless statements;
• proxy access for eligible family/caregiver situations.

A MyChart activation code generally expires if it is not used within 45 days. Johns Hopkins also offers identity-verified self-signup for eligible patients.

Free JHGuestnet wireless access is available throughout the hospital, including patient rooms, the lobby and cafeteria.

Pharmacy near the hospital

Feldman’s Pharmacy is on the lower level of Columbia Medical Center, 11055 Little Patuxent Parkway. Johns Hopkins specifically notes that this pharmacy is not operated by Howard County Medical Center or Johns Hopkins Medicine.

Language and ASL services

Howard County Medical Center provides interpretation for patients and people assisting with their care through:

• in-person interpreters;
• telephone interpretation;
• video remote interpretation;
• American Sign Language interpretation.

Wheelchair or special assistance

Tell the representative at the main Information Desk when you arrive if you or the person you are accompanying needs a wheelchair or other assistance.

Service animals

Johns Hopkins has a hospital policy for patients and visitors arriving with trained service animals. Unit-specific clinical restrictions can apply where infection control or patient safety requires them.

Care partners picking up a patient can call the hospitality suite upon arrival so staff can coordinate bringing the discharged patient out.

Regional Transportation Agency of Central Maryland bus service reaches the hospital campus. The current RTA Route 404 schedule continues to identify the stop using the former name Howard County General Hospital.

RTA also links the Columbia area through Howard Community College and the Mall in Columbia, both near the medical campus.
