What happens when you arrive?

Patients are assessed by an emergency-care team and assigned an urgency level from 1 through 5, with Level 1 representing the most serious emergencies. Treatment therefore is not strictly first-come, first-served.

Some testing and treatment can begin during the intake process before a patient reaches a private treatment room.

Emergency visitor limit

Frederick Health currently limits the Emergency Department treatment area to two visitors per patient. Families are encouraged to designate one spokesperson who can communicate updates to other relatives and friends.

Frederick Health Hospital operates a separate Pediatric Emergency Center 24 hours a day. The pediatric area is staffed by emergency physicians and specially trained pediatric staff.

Families do not need to find a separate hospital address. Pediatric emergency patients access the specialized area through the main Frederick Health Hospital Emergency Department at 400 West 7th Street.

How to find the exact day your doctor is available

1. Search the Frederick Health provider directory by doctor name.
2. Confirm the provider’s current practice location.
3. Call that practice instead of assuming the doctor is at the hospital every day.
4. Ask for the earliest appointment with the named physician.
5. Confirm whether telehealth is available.
6. Confirm whether a PCP referral or insurance authorization is needed.

Maryland hospital charges are state regulated

Frederick Health Hospital’s regulated hospital rates are governed by the Maryland Health Services Cost Review Commission (HSCRC). Hospital rates are based on resources used and are not simply set independently by Frederick Health for each insurer.

The hospital’s current public chargemaster reflects charges effective February 20, 2026. Maryland hospital rate updates generally align with HSCRC rate-setting cycles.

Hospital charge does not include every doctor bill

Physician and certain contracted-provider professional fees are separate from the regulated hospital bill. This is why an ER visit, surgery or imaging study can produce more than one statement.

Emergency room fee

Frederick Health does not publish one universal flat ER fee because the hospital charge depends on the level of emergency care and services actually used. Tests, CT scans, X-rays, medications, supplies and other services can add to the hospital bill.

Emergency physicians are currently contracted through Sound Physicians Emergency Medicine of Maryland, which can bill separately.

Doctor consultation fee

There is no single Frederick Health Medical Group consultation price that applies to every specialty. A primary-care appointment, oncology consultation, orthopedic visit, surgical consultation and hospital specialist evaluation can all be billed differently.

Frederick Health’s hospital transparency file includes an estimated self-pay cash charge with a 2% prompt-payment discount under applicable Maryland HSCRC rules.

Who may qualify?

Uninsured, underinsured and other patients who cannot reasonably pay for medically necessary care may qualify. Frederick Health uses a sliding scale based on household income and Federal Poverty Guidelines.

The current 2026 policy states that Frederick Health’s standard assistance program provides a reduction greater than 20% for qualifying households with family income at or below 500% of the Federal Poverty Level.

Presumptive free-care situations can include

Medical Hardship Program

Patients who do not qualify through the standard program may qualify for medical hardship when Frederick Health medical debt exceeds 25% of combined household income during a 12-month period.

Under the current policy, this hardship pathway primarily applies to households above 500% of the Federal Poverty Level and can provide a 20% reduction for medically necessary Frederick Health care during the applicable 12-month period.

Assets

Frederick Health’s 2026 policy says household monetary assets generally are not considered unless readily available assets exceed $100,000. Tax-advantaged retirement assets are excluded from that calculation.

How long does a decision take?

Once a complete application has been received, Frederick Health says an eligibility decision is generally issued within 14 days.

Application window

Patients can generally submit financial-assistance documentation within 240 days after the first post-discharge billing statement, subject to policy requirements.

Financial-assistance application help

Frederick Health treats patients with Medicare, Medicaid, commercial insurance, managed-care plans, workers’ compensation, government coverage and self-pay arrangements.

Because insurance networks can change by employer and product, the safest method is to verify the exact plan name rather than relying only on the insurance-company name.

Before a planned visit

1. Call the number on the insurance card.
2. Confirm Frederick Health Hospital is in network.
3. Confirm the named physician is also in network.
4. Ask whether a referral is required.
5. Ask whether prior authorization is required for imaging, surgery or another service.
6. Ask about your deductible and coinsurance.

Frederick Health Hospital has an on-campus parking garage serving patients and visitors. The hospital is currently completing improvements to the garage, but it remains open and in use.

Frederick Health’s current surgical patient guidance states that a complimentary parking valet is available for surgical patients. Follow your surgery-arrival instructions because entrance procedures can vary.

Frederick Health Security operates 24/7 and can be reached at 240-566-3505. The main public Security Office is in the Emergency Department waiting area.

Visitor identification

Hospital visitors are required to present identification to Security at either the Main Entrance or the Emergency Department.

Outpatient locations

Frederick Health ambulatory and outpatient locations generally allow two support persons, although this may change based on visitor-status levels, space and clinical needs.

Surgery recovery visitors

For outpatient surgery, one visitor may generally enter the recovery area when the patient is close to discharge and the care team determines it is appropriate. The visitor who will care for the patient at home is encouraged to be the person present for discharge instructions.

Photography and recording

Frederick Health’s patient rules prohibit unauthorized photographs or recordings of staff or other individuals.

Smoking, vaping and substances

Hospital rules prohibit tobacco, inhaled nicotine, illicit drugs and unauthorized alcohol use in restricted hospital settings.

How to request records

1. Use the hospital’s electronic record-request partner, or
2. Complete the Authorization to Release Medical Information form.
3. Sign the request.
4. Send the request to Health Information Management.
5. Bring photo identification when picking up records in person.

Diagnostic images

Frederick Health imaging can be accessed electronically through PocketHealth. Patients can also request images through the Frederick Health Village Medical Records office.

Imaging walk-in pickup is available at Frederick Health Village Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–3:30 p.m..

There is no fee for X-ray or imaging studies released for follow-up treatment with the patient’s physician. Fees may apply for some non-treatment record requests as permitted by law.

The Frederick Health Patient Portal provides online access to available health information, results, reports, appointments and other patient-account functions.

How to enroll

1. Provide a valid email address during registration at a Frederick Health facility.
2. Tell Registration you want online health-information access.
3. Watch for the Frederick Health Patient Portal enrollment/password-reset email.
4. Complete enrollment using the email instructions.

What is available?

Parent and proxy access

Parents or legal guardians can obtain proxy access for eligible minor patients. Frederick Health states that parental portal access changes when a child reaches age 13. Adult proxy access requires a completed Proxy Access Request and Authorization form.

Proxy forms can be faxed to 240-566-3619.

Portal messages are not for emergencies

Frederick Health advises that portal messages may take up to three business days for review and are not intended for emergency symptoms or complex urgent medical discussions.

Retail outpatient pharmacy

Frederick Health’s current main-hospital public directory does not identify a retail outpatient pharmacy at 400 West 7th Street. Before discharge, ask the nurse which pharmacy received your prescription and whether any medication needs to be picked up before leaving.
