Ohio Hospital Care Assurance Program — HCAP

HCAP can apply when an applicant:

Akron Children’s Charity Care

If a family is not eligible for Medicaid or HCAP, the hospital’s charity-care program may help.

Families with gross income at or below 400% of the Federal Poverty Level may qualify for charity care, depending on program requirements.

Households above 400% may still request an exception review through the hospital’s Financial Assistance Committee.

Amounts Generally Billed protection

A patient who qualifies for financial assistance will not be charged more for emergency or other medically necessary care than the amount generally billed to insured patients under the hospital’s policy.

Akron Children’s says its financial-assistance policy covers eligible hospital services and hospital-employed providers, including hospital anesthesia services and Akron Children’s-owned transport. Some independent credentialed professionals may not be covered by the hospital assistance program.

Akron Children’s parking: free family parking, decks and valet fees

Immediate family members receive free parking regardless of the length of the visit. Families are still encouraged to validate their parking ticket to avoid an unexpected automated-gate charge.

Are the parking decks open overnight?

Yes. All three Akron campus decks are open 24 hours.

If arriving after 9 p.m., the hospital recommends the Exchange Deck because it provides direct access into the hospital.

Parking cost for other visitors

Visitors who are not immediate patient family can be charged a maximum of $4.

Akron Children’s current parking pages contain inconsistent wording about whether the visitor grace period is two or four hours. The main parking page says four hours, while individual deck pages say two hours. Because of that inconsistency, validate the ticket and follow the posted garage signage rather than relying on the grace period alone.

For most hospital areas, parents and guardians are welcome 24/7. Other visitors are generally welcome from 8 a.m.-8 p.m..

General current visitor rules

No more than four people at bedside, including staff members.
Parents and guardians: 24/7.
Other visitors: generally 8 a.m.-8 p.m.
General visitors must be age 12 or older and accompanied by an adult.
All visitors must obtain and wear a visitor badge.
Do not visit when ill with fever, cough, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhea or similar symptoms.

Can a parent stay overnight with a hospitalized child?

Yes. Akron Children’s states that one parent or another adult authorized by the parent/legal guardian may stay overnight at the child’s bedside, subject to unit restrictions.

Private rooms include a sleep chair or settee that converts into a single bed. Units can provide linen “parent packs,” and patient rooms have storage and bathroom access.

Ronald McDonald House of Akron

The Ronald McDonald House is conveniently located across from Akron Children’s Hospital. Services are free for eligible patient families.

Contact the child’s social worker or Ronald McDonald House Charities Northeast Ohio. New requests are placed on a waiting list while eligibility, background screening and availability are checked.

The background check can take approximately 1–2 days, and room requests can generally be made up to 7 days before arrival.
