What Level II trauma coverage includes

Forrest General states that trauma services have 24-hour coverage from general surgeons along with specialist support in:

That specialist coverage is important for patients with severe head injuries, multiple fractures, internal injuries and other complex trauma that requires rapid coordinated hospital care.

How emergency waiting works

Emergency care is based on medical urgency rather than simple order of arrival. A patient with a life-threatening condition may be treated before someone who arrived earlier.

Cardiology and heart/vascular physicians

Hattiesburg Clinic Heart & Vascular provides hospital and outpatient cardiology services across the Pine Belt. The Hattiesburg office can be reached at 601-268-5800.

Forrest Health Institute of Neuroscience physicians

FHIN schedules at 601-288-3446. A referral is not required for its outpatient appointment process.

Cancer and hematology physicians

Forrest General Cancer Center works with Hattiesburg Clinic Hematology/Oncology and radiation-oncology specialists. Cancer Center: 601-288-1700. Hematology/Oncology clinic: 601-261-1700.

Gastroenterology hospital care

Hattiesburg Clinic provides inpatient gastroenterology hospital-care services at Forrest General. The hospital-care line is 601-268-5680. This service evaluates hospitalized patients with gastrointestinal, liver and pancreatic conditions; it is not a walk-in outpatient clinic.

Forrest General describes the facility as the only comprehensive community cancer center in its 19-county service area and states that it is accredited through the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer.

Outpatient cancer services

Outpatient Clinical Solutions at the Cancer Center includes an on-site pharmacist and specially trained nurses for:

Radiation oncology

Radiation planning, treatment and follow-up are provided at the Cancer Center. Forrest General’s Radiation Oncology Department reports American College of Radiology accreditation and provides stereotactic radiosurgery and image-guided treatment.

Inpatient oncology

When hospitalization is required, the dedicated inpatient oncology unit is on the sixth floor of Forrest General Hospital.

Clinical trials

Current trial programs include research involving lung, breast, kidney and colon cancers as well as leukemia, lymphoma and multiple myeloma. Clinical-trial questions can be directed to 601-261-1700.

Where to enter

The dedicated Women & Children’s / Family Birthplace entrance is on the fourth floor of Garage A.

Its currently published entrance hours are Monday–Friday, 7 a.m.–10:30 p.m.; the dedicated Garage A Level 4 entrance is listed as closed on weekends.

Labor and postpartum

• Birthing coaches are welcome during labor and delivery.
• Mother and newborn are generally cared for together through couplet care.
• Rooming-in is encouraged when medically appropriate.
• Staff provide breastfeeding and newborn-care support.
• A newborn transition nursery is available.

What to bring for delivery

Regular published hours

Monday–Friday: 6 a.m.–9 p.m.. The structured schedule lists Saturday and Sunday as closed, while the facility also notes that some Saturdays may have patient activity and that closure time can depend on when all patients have been discharged.

Why you may receive separate bills

Forrest General’s hospital bill can include the room, meals, round-the-clock nursing, laboratory tests, medications, therapy and other hospital services. Physicians may bill their professional services separately.

Get an individualized estimate

Patients with an established Iris account can use insurance information stored in the portal to produce an estimate. Guests can also use the estimate tool without an Iris account by entering their insurance information manually.

Forrest Health warns that estimates are not guarantees and may not include all separately billed professional fees.

Precertification matters

Forrest Health notes that many commercial insurance plans require precertification for hospital stays, diagnostic tests and procedures. Patients should verify that required authorization has been obtained before scheduled care.

Hospital vs physician network

Do not assume that every physician treating you is contracted under exactly the same terms as the hospital. Confirm both the hospital facility and relevant physician or physician group with your insurer.

Medicare and Medicaid

Forrest Health participates in Medicare and Medicaid. Coverage rules, deductibles, coinsurance and service-specific requirements still apply.

If you have more than one insurance policy

Coordination of Benefits determines which plan pays first and which plan is secondary. If an insurer requests COB information, respond promptly because a missing COB update can delay claim processing.

If you are uninsured

Forrest Health’s business office can discuss payment arrangements, while hospital social-service resources may help identify Medicaid or other government-program eligibility.

Eligibility is determined under the current hospital policy based on documented financial circumstances. The public current page does not present one simple universal dollar cutoff that can safely be applied to every household, so this guide does not invent a percentage or income amount.

What to do if you cannot afford the bill

Visitor limits

• No more than four visitors in a patient room at one time.
• Overnight guests are limited to approximately one or two per patient.
• Oncology patients who are immunosuppressed may have additional unit-specific restrictions.
• Do not visit if you have a cold, sore throat or contagious illness.
• Observe isolation and “No Visiting” signs.
• Visitors may be asked to leave during procedures or treatments.
• The campus is tobacco-free.

Hospital police/security can also assist with safety escorts, lost property, vehicle incidents and other campus-security concerns.

Check Iris first. Results, visit information and other portions of the patient record may already be visible without a formal Release of Information request.

Discharge pharmacy

Forrest General has a discharge-pharmacy service that can deliver eligible prescriptions to the patient’s bedside before leaving the hospital. Current public pages do not provide a reliable retail counter schedule to reproduce here, so ask the inpatient care team whether bedside delivery is available for your discharge.

The physician determines when a patient is medically ready for discharge. Before leaving, make sure you understand:

• New medications and which old medications should stop or continue.
• Diet instructions.
• Activity restrictions.
• Wound or incision care.
• Warning signs that require a call or return to care.
• Follow-up appointments.
• Home medical equipment requirements.
• Transportation arrangements.

Retrieve valuables before leaving and have an appropriate person available to drive or assist the patient when needed. Hospital discharge-planning resources can help coordinate equipment, transportation, home care or other support.
